Deem, Stroberg post double-doubles in 76-58 win over UCCS

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team concluded their homestand in style rolling to a 76-58 non-conference win against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Friday.

The Rangers (3-1 overall) shot 45 percent (28-for-62) as a team on Friday and received two double-double performances from Sam Deem and Erin Stroberg.

Friday's win against the Mountain Lions (1-3 overall) comes after a 30-point fourth quarter performance Tuesday in a comeback victory over the University of Texas Permian Basin.

"I think it's huge. After Tuesday, we could've said that was amazing and settled, but there wasn't a drop," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "That's toughness in itself. We challenged ourselves to have a better start, and we did. I think we put together a better 40 minutes than we did on Tuesday."

How It Happened: Regis created all the cushion it would need in the first half after a pair of scoring runs. The Rangers closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run, punctuated by a Josey Ryan jumper to give them a 19-12 lead.

Maintaining a five-point lead early in the second quarter, the Rangers then exploded for a 11-0 run that inflated the lead to 33-17 with 4:28 remaining in the first half. Regis would lead by as many as 22 points in the first half and enjoyed a 43-27 lead at the break.

Regis shot a blistering 57 percent from the field (17-for-30), while they limited UCCS to pedestrian 32 percent (12-for-37).

"We were getting stops. We got transition buckets and that's where we're best but you don't get those transition buckets unless you get stops," said Marrin, regarding the Rangers' first-half runs. "Our offense starts with our defense and we weren't defending well at times. So I think when we were it showed and that was the disparity in the score because we were able to get the looks we wanted in the transition and the offense."

UCCS would claw back within 13 at the end of the third quarter at 59-46, but the Rangers squashed any comeback hopes with a 11-2 run to build their largest lead of the game of 23 points at 73-50 with 4:08 remaining on a jumper by Stroberg.

Stroberg recorded her first double-double of 2022 with season-highs in points (13) and rebounds (10).

Deem led all Rangers with 16 points on Friday and added 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the early going. The Thornton, Colo. native shot 6-of-13 from the field and was 2-of-4 from three-point range.

"She's just so much more confident. She's shooting the three well, she's 2-for-4 there so you have to guard her. If they sink in on our post, Sam's open on the perimeter so they have to pick one," said Marrin. "She's put the time in working on her shooting and she's just overall more confident, more athletic. She's a better defender and she's better in every area."

In total, the Rangers had five players in double figures. Joining Deem and Stroberg were sophomore guard Athena Saragoza, as well as junior guards Madison Diercks and Erin Fry. Fry posted 13 points while Saragoza and Diercks each added 10 points apiece.

Game Notes:
  • The Rangers held the lead for almost the whole game, clocking in at 36:23
  • Madison Diercks led the Rangers in points off the bench with 10
  • The Rangers set a season-high record of 49 rebounds
  • The Rangers won the offensive rebound battle, totaling 12 and getting 10 second chance points
Up Next: The Rangers concludes their non-conference schedule with a pair of regional games Friday and Saturday during the Thanksgiving Classic hosted at the Regis Field House. Regis opens the classic against Seattle Pacific University on Friday at 1 P.M. before ending the weekend with a matchup against Central Washington University on Saturday at 3:30 P.M.
