Rangers finish preseason play with loss to Central Washington

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team wrapped up their preseason schedule against Central Washington University on Saturday, falling to the Cougars, 90-66.

The Rangers (3-3 overall) held tough against the visiting Wildcats (5-1 overall) in the early going, trailing just 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. But it would be a dreadful second quarter that proved to be the difference Saturday.

How It Happened: Central Washington created the all the seperation it needed with a 20-1 blitz to open the start of the second quarter, turning a slim 17-14 advantage into a 37-15 lead with 5:06 remaining before halftime.

The Wildcats would go on to outscore the Rangers 39-14 in the quarter, shooting a staggering 68 percent (13-for-19) from the field, to take a 56-28 lead into the locker rooms.

Regis would outscore the Wildcats by four in the second half (38-34), but were unable to climb out of the second-quarter hole as Central Washington sealed the 90-66 final

Three Rangers finished in double figures on Saturday, led by junior guard Erin Fry with a team-high 15 points on the night. Sophomore guard Athena Saragoza and senior forward Morgan L. Smith each added 10 points apiece, as well. The 10 points for Smith were a season-high for the Wray native.

  • Regis finished with an 11-5 advantage in offensive rebounds
