Rangers mount second-half comeback, but drop RMAC opener in OT to Black Hills State

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Regis University women's basketball team opened RMAC conference play out on the road Friday, putting together a spirited second-half comeback that fell just shy in a 71-64 overtime loss to Black Hills State University.

Regis (3-4 overall, 0-1 RMAC), led by a season-high 24 points from junior guard Erin Fry, erased a 13-point deficit with 4:52 remaining in the third quarter to take a five-point lead at 53-48 midway through the fourth.

Unfortunately, they were unable to sustain the momentum during the overtime period against a red-hot Yellow Jackets squad (6-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED: Black Hills State controlled the opening 20 minutes, building an 18-12 advantage in the opening quarter and carrying a 33-23 lead into the halftime locker rooms.

The Yellow Jackets would grow their lead to 43-40 in the third quarter before the Rangers mounted their comeback. Regis trimmed the deficit to four points (48-44) entering the fourth quarter and took its first lead of the second half at 49-48 at the 7:17 mark on a layup by Fry.

Graduate student guard Alexius Foster, who scored a season-high seven points off the bench Friday, swished a baseline jumper with 4:59 remaining to cap the 9-0 run and give the Rangers' their largest lead of the game at 53-48.

Each team had their chances to win the game in regulation as Regis held leads in the final 90 seconds of 57-56 on a layup from graduate student forward Erin Stroberg, and at 59-58 courtesy of a driving layup in traffic by senior forward Sam Deem with 54 ticks remaining.

With the game tied 60-60, the Regis defense got a last-second stop at the buzzer, forcing an errant turnaround jumper by BHSU guard Danica Kocer, to send the game to overtime.

Unfortunately for Regis, the final five minutes of the overtime period would belong to the Yellow Jackets as they opened on an 8-0 run to take a 68-60 lead with 1:21 remaining to seal the 71-64 final.

Fry shot an economical 8-for-15 on Friday, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, en route to her season-high 24 points. She was joined in double-figures by Stroberg, who tied her season high with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.

Deem was just two points shy of her third double-double of 2022-23 as she finished with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished with a 24-14 advantage in bench points
  • BHSU held a 20-5 advantage in points off turnovers
  • The Rangers limited BHSU to 23 percent (3-for-13) shooting in the fourth quarter
