Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | David Wilson, Assistant AD-Communications

Ten different players score, Rangers erupt in third quarter to earn first RMAC win against Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Propelled by a dominant third-quarter effort, the Regis University women's basketball team rolled to a 77-48 road win over South Dakota Mines on Saturday, splitting the team's South Dakota road trip and earning its first RMAC Conference win of 2022-23.

Regis (4-4 overall, 1-1 RMAC) shot a sizzling 56 percent (10-for-18) in the third quarter, outscoring the hometown Hardrockers (1-7 overall, 1-1 RMAC), 26-10. Regis would finish the evening at a 43.9 percent (29-for-66) clip for the game while 10 different Rangers cracked the scoring column Saturday.

The Rangers complimented that offensive output on the defensive end of the floor as they limited South Dakota Mines to a meager 3-for-15 (20%) in the decisive third quarter and to a pedestrian 30 percent (19-for-63) for the game.

"It was a great bounce-back performance for us after an overtime loss (Friday) to a NCAA Tournament team last year, regionally ranked team, in Black Hills State. We knew how we can play and who we can play with after last night, so we were able to stay confident and believed more in ourselves today," said Regis head women's basketball coach, Molly Marrin. "We took a step forward and I was really proud of how we came out and put a complete game together for 40 minutes."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The two RMAC foes were locked in a tight game early, with Regis able to snag a slim 20-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, both teams struggled to generate much offense in the second quarter. Regis, despite shooting just 5-of-20 in the second quarter, the Rangers' defense limited SDM to just 2-of-13 shooting (15%) and forced five turnovers as they methodically outscored the Hardrockers, 12-6, and extended their lead to 32-23 at the break.

Coming out of the locker rooms, the Rangers kept the hammer down as they stacked two separate scoring runs of 10-0 and 9-0 in the third quarter to create all the cushion they'd need the rest of the way, cruising to the 77-48 victory.

"We talked a lot about our help rotations, making sure we were getting over because (Hardrockers) were trying to drive into the paint and post up. I thought out rotations were better and our box outs were better in that third quarter," Marrin said. "And when we get defensive stops, we can do what we do best, which is our transition. Stringing those stops together let us build that lead instead of trading buckets."

Regis punished the Hardrockers in transition, finishing the night with a 12-1 advantage in fast break points. The Rangers were just as dangerous in the half-court setting, as well, as the offense came from everywhere Saturday with nine different players finishing with six or more points.

Graduate student forward Erin Stroberg with 14 points to go with her team-high eight rebounds. Senior guard Josey Ryan and sophomore guard Athena Saragoza each poured in 11 points apiece to join Stroberg in double-figures. Ryan would add a team-high two blocks, two steals and four rebounds in her 22 minutes.

Junior guard Madison Diercks and senior forward Sydney Speights each followed with seven points and five rebounds apiece, while the quartet of Erin Fry, Sam Deem, Morgan L. Smith and Kyla Frenchers all tallied six points apiece to help lead a balanced Regis offense that racked up 37 bench points Saturday.

"I think we know the depth we have as a team. We may not have necessarily played it as much during the non-conference season as we did tonight, but we've known it and our team knows it. Everyone is ready when they come off the bench," Marrin said. "Everybody did their jobs and I think it just speaks to our depth and player readiness off the bench."

 GAME NOTES:
  • Regis never trailed Saturday, leading for 98.5% of game time
  • The 77 points were a season high for the Rangers
  • The 26-point third quarter was the second most points in a quarter for Regis in 2022-23, just shy of the 30-point fourth quarter in the team's win over UT-Permian Basin (Nov. 15)
  • Regis swatted a season-high seven blocks, led by Ryan and Deem with two apiece
  • Regis dominated on the interior, finishing with a 46-32 advantage in points in the paint
UP NEXT: The Rangers begin a three-game home stand next Friday and Saturday with conference matchups against Westminster College (5 p.m. Friday) and Colorado Mesa University (3 p.m. Saturday) inside the Regis Field House.
