Rangers' rally falls just shy in 66-65 home loss to Westminster

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's basketball team made a furious fourth-quarter rally on Friday, but fell just shy of completing the comeback as the team fell, 66-65, to Westminster College in its RMAC home opener inside the Regis Field House.

Regis (4-5 overall, 1-2 RMAC) erased what was a 16-point deficit midway through the third quarter to pull even twice in the final 90 seconds, and had an opportunity to tie or take the lead at the free-throw line in the final seconds, but were unable to knock off the visiting Griffins (4-5 overall, 2-1 RMAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED: Westminster built its lead with a strong second-quarter effort, outscoring the Rangers, 19-10, to take a 31-21 lead into the halftime locker rooms and limiting Regis to nine made field goals (9-for-36, 25%) through the first 20 minutes.

The Griffins built their largest lead at 44-28 with 5:53 remaining in the third quarter before the Rangers flipped the script.

Implementing a full-court press, the Rangers forced 14 of the Griffins' 29 turnovers over the final 15 minutes and change, including 11 turnovers in the fourth quarter, to methodically work their way back into the ballgame.

Regis cut the deficit back to single digits at the 6:09 mark via a layup by junior guard Erin Fry and pulled even for the first time in the second half at 62-62 on a driving layup cashed in by sophomore guard Athena Saragoza with 1:15 remaining.

The Rangers again tied the score with 17 ticks remaining on a basket by graduate student forward Erin Stroberg. Westminster would answer with a basket of its own with four seconds remaining to take a 64-62 lead, setting the stage for a wild finish in the final second.

Fry took the ensuing in-bound pass and was fouled just inside mid-court on a 3-point attempt. She nailed the first free throw, but had her final two attempts spin out to seal the 66-65 final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Stroberg led all Rangers with 17 points Friday, tying her career high previously set Dec. 18, 2021 on the road against Western Colorado
  • Fry was the second Regis player in double-figures with 10 points, while Saragoza added nine points
  • Senior forward Morgan L. Smith led Regis with 10 rebounds to go with her seven points
  • The Rangers finished the evening with a 30-13 advantage in bench points
  • The 29 forced turnovers by the Regis defense was a season high and the most they've forced since tying the mark of 29 on Dec. 19, 2014 against Chadron State College

UP NEXT: The Rangers will look to rebound Saturday when they continue their three-game home stand against Colorado Mesa University (1-8 overall, 0-3 RMAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. inside the Regis Field House.
