Rangers open fourth quarter on 13-2 blitz, knock off Colorado Mesa to conclude weekend

DENVER, Colo. — A fast start and a strong finish would be the story for the Regis University women's basketball team on Friday in its 72-64 home win over Colorado Mesa University as the Rangers combined to outscore the visiting Mavericks, 40-24, between the first and fourth quarters.

With the victory, the Rangers (5-5 overall, 2-2 RMAC) improved back to .500 on the season, on their home floor (3-3) and in RMAC play while the loss dropped an injury-ravished Colorado Mesa squad to 1-9 overall and 0-4 inside the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis got off to a fast start Saturday, leading by as many as 12 points in the first quarter at 18-6. The Rangers connected on four of their nine made 3-pointers in the quarter (4-for-9) and enjoyed a 20-13 lead entering the second.

After going in the half up 36-30, the Rangers had to withstand a third-quarter run by the Mavericks that saw Colorado Mesa take a 53-52 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Regis would take back control of the game early in the fourth quarter, though, as it opened on a 13-2 blitz, ballooning their lead back to 10 points at 65-55 with 4:12 remaining on a corner 3-pointer by junior guard Erin Fry.

Colorado Mesa would never inch closer than four points the rest of the way as the Rangers held on for the 72-64 final.

Fry led three Regis players in double-figures with 16 points, adding five rebounds and four assists while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range.

Senior guard Josey Ryan followed with 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while graduate student forward Erin Stroberg notched her second double-double of the 2022-23 season with 14 points and team-high 11 rebounds.

Sophomore point guard Athena Saragoza and senior forward Sam Deem each added eight points apiece to help pace the Regis offense.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis outscored the Mavericks by 18 points from 3-point range, finishing with nine made 3-pointers (9-for-23) versus the three makes (3-for-17) by the Mavericks.
  • The Rangers were lethal in transition, outscoring CMU, 21-9 in fast break points and 20-4 in points off turnovers.
  • Regis finished with an 18-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, led by Stroberg with her eight offensive boards.

UP NEXT: Regis will conclude its current three-game home stand next Friday when it hosts Chadron State College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the Regis Field House.
