Sowizral, Theis paced No. 14 Rangers in sweep of Westminster College

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 14 ranked Regis University volleyball team opened an important two-match home stand to end the regular season on Friday, knocking off Westminster College in straight sets (25-18, 25-18 and 25-14) to hold serve with No. 15 ranked Colorado Mesa University for second place in the RMAC standings.

Regis (19-6 overall, 15-2 RMAC) and the Mavericks (20-4 overall, 15-2 RMAC) square off at 3 p.m. Saturday in a matchup that will decide the No. 2 seed next week's RMAC Tournament. But to even have that opportunity, the Rangers knew they had to remain focused on the task at hand Friday against a pesky Griffins team (6-20 overall, 4-14 RMAC).

"It would have been easy for us to get complacent and look forward to things (Saturday) and in the future, but I thought we did a good job staying in the present tonight," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We didn't play as clean and efficient as we needed to be, or how we wanted to be, but by the end of the night we were much better at that."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Rangers never trailed Friday, leaning on an attack that finished the evening with 52 kills and a .330 hitting percentage; the most kills by Regis in a three-set match this season.

Regis cruised along at a .364 clip and 18 kills in the first set and creating all the cushion it'd need with a 6-2 blitz midway through the set that ballooned an 11-9 lead into a 17-11 advantage.

The offense hit a brief snag in the second set, finishing with 18 kills and seven errors on a pedestrian .220 attack percentage, but the Rangers received timely kills from graduate student right side hitter Klaudia Sowizral to help weather the storm.

Sowizral tallied eight of her team-high 13 kills in the 25-18 win in Set Two and finished the evening with a .391 hitting percentage on 23 total swings.

"Mara (LeGrand) did a great job getting the ball to Klaudia and she had kills at opportune times when we needed a little bit of momentum," List said. "Westminster was keeping it a 1-2 point lead before we were able to break it open a bit and lot of that had to do with Klaudia. She was instrumental adding the energy we needed."

Junior outside hitter Halle Theis added to the Rangers' one-two punch Friday with 12 kills on a sizzling .455 hitting percentage, taking advantage of a mismatch Regis spotted against the Westminster setter.

Theis, who added 10 digs Friday for her seventh double-double of the season, had four of her 12 kills in the deciding third set, including back-to-back kills for Regis that capped an 8-1 scoring run to extend the team's lead to 20-11.

"Having the setter on (Westminster's) side matching up rotations against Halle, we saw an opportunity for her and she did a great job taking advantage of that," List said. "Kudos to her because she did exactly what we asked of her."

Regis middle blockers Amelia Davis and Nadine Burbrink added eight kills and seven kills, respectively, while setter Mara LeGrand notched five kills to go with her 40 assists and 15 digs.

Senior defensive specialist Haley Kennedy led all Rangers with 16 digs Friday while providing a spark at the service line that correlated with a handful of the Rangers' extended runs.
"Haley did a great job hitting the zones we needed to and her ball was moving very well, so she was at the service line quite a bit," List said.

UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude the 2022 regular season with a primetime matchup against No. 15 Colorado Mesa at 3 p.m. Saturday inside the Regis Field House.

The winner of Saturday's contest locks up the No. 2 seed in the RMAC Tournament, and improves their spot in the regional rankings, while a loss could slide one of the two RMAC foes into the third or fourth seed behind No. 22 Colorado School of Mines depending on tiebreaker scenarios.

"Colorado Mesa pose a lot of different things with their offense that make them a challenge for us. We've been preparing all week and we're very similar when you look at us on paper," List said. "It should be a great matchup. We're very different teams in the ways that we play, so it's going to be interesting to see how we match up that way on the court."
