Four homers and Covington's second shutout of the weekend ground Eagles

DENVER - The Regis University softball team (20-11, 14-2 RMAC) completed their series sweep over the Chadron State College Eagles (4-24, 3-13 RMAC) Sunday afternoon at the Regis Softball Field. Regis opened the closing doubleheader with nine hits and three homers in the 9-4 win. In the closer, junior Abby Covington (3-1) dueled her second shutout of the weekend to finish the sweep!

Game One | How it Happened: Freshman RHP Kylie Harpman (10-4) started game one for the Rangers. 

Chadron State got rolling early with three runs in the first inning, but RU wasn't fazed. Senior Jessi Case hit a solo dinger to kick things off for the Rangers in the home at-bat of the first.

Then in second, freshman Miia Campos hit a nice RBI single to and graduate student Allisha Martinez hit a massive three RBI bomb to swing momentum in Regis' favor. 

Senior Carly Beard kept the home run derby going with yet another three RBI jack to left center, inflating Regis' lead to 8-3. Later in the fourth, the bats were still hot as freshman Rachel Williams slammed a solo RBI homer. 

The Eagles made the score 4-9 in the fifth, but that was all she wrote.   

Game Notes: RU scored nine runs off nine hits and had three errors.

Campos was 2-4 and had a RBI.

Sophomore Katherine Raper was 2-4 while Beard was 2-3. Beard tied the game-high with three RBI.

Martinez was 1-3 and had three RBI as well. 

Case had a team-high five putouts.

Game Two | How it Happened: Covington's stellar pitching was helped immensely by the Rangers' offense. Scoring commenced in the first inning when Beard knocked a RBI single through the left side. Later in the inning, freshman Mia Moore and senior Carly Gray drew bases loaded walks to increase the team's lead to 3-0.

Then in the third, Gray hit a two RBI double before an offensive explosion in the fourth. Raper reached on a CSC error and Campos scored. Another bases-juiced walk with Williams in the box made the score 7-0.  

Finally, freshman Lima Magana scored off Beard's sac bunt and Moore got a RBI single to finish off the Eagles.

Game Notes: RU scored nine runs off nine hits and had one error.

Martinez led RU at the plate, she was 2-3.

Moore and Gray were each 2-2 at the plate. Gray exploded for a career-high three RBI and Moore had a pair.

Beard was 1-2 and had two RBI.

Sophomore Carryn Leto had a game-high five putouts while Covington had two assists to lead Regis.

In the circle, Covington only allowed two hits and had five strikeouts.

Up Next For The Rangers: The Rangers will take on conference leaders, Colorado Mesa (22-4, 19-0), this weekend.
