DENVER - The Regis University softball team (21-18, 15-9 RMAC) returned to the diamond to face Colorado Christian (33-5, 21-1 RMAC) in the series' closing doubleheader after falling in both ends yesterday. Today just wasn't the girls' day as the team suffered another doubleheader sweep from the conference's top-dogs.
Game One | How it Happened: Freshman RHP Harpman (L, 11-7) started on the mound in the DH opener for the Rangers.
CCU got aboard quickly in the first after a solo homer, but Regis responded well by posting three runs through the first and second. A couple of Cougar errors helped Regis get two runners home in the first, then another error in the third allowed sophomore Victoria McMains to reach home plate, making the score 3-1, RU.
But, Colorado Christian reclaimed the lead in the third inning with a trio of runs, giving them a 4-3 lead and never relinquished it.
After five more runs were scored on Harpman, sophomore Katherine Raper left her position on first base to pitch for the starter.
CCU made their lead 11-3 in the fourth, but a two RBI yard call from senior Jessi Case cut into Regis' deficit.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Megan Loveland came in to pitch for Raper, who returned to first. The Cougars scored a couple more runs to lead by eight runs, threatening a run rule. Since the Rangers went down without a run in the fifth, the game ended early at 13-5.
Game Notes: RU posted five runs off four hits and no errors.
Case led in the batter's box with a two-for-two performance and two RBI. She also had a game-high two assists.
Sophomore Victoria McMains and Raper had the other two hits on the team. Raper had the game-high five putouts.
Harpman led the squad with two strikeouts.
Game Two | How it Happened: The DH closer saw junior RHP
Abby Covington (L, 3-5) start game two in the circle for RU.
Once again, Regis owned an early lead in the first inning after Raper logged a two RBI single to right field. However, CCU stormed back and scored six unanswered runs through the second and third.
Graduate student Allisha Martinez decreased CCU's lead to three runs in the third inning when she doubled to left center, scoring freshman Miia Campos. Then in the fourth inning both teams would add a run - Regis' run came from freshman Mia Moore who scored off a couple of CCU errors.
With sophomore Alexis Kemp in the circle for the Rangers, Colorado Christian had a predictive six-run fifth inning, going up 14-4.
Freshman Rachel Williams' sac fly in the home half of the fifth wasn't enough to avoid another run rule as Regis fell, 14-5.
Game Notes: Regis scored five runs off eight hits and had one error.
Campos was a perfect 3-3 at the plate while Raper and Case each logged a pair of hits.
Raper led with two RBI while Martinez and Williams had one a piece.
Freshman Jordan Simonsgaard logged a career-high six putouts.
Up Next For The Rangers: The team will look to have a quick turnaround this coming weekend when they play host to CSU Pueblo (14-15, 10-14 RMAC) this coming weekend.
