Jeff Frykholm tabbed as Rangers' new Head Women's Soccer Coach

| By:
DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University Department of Athletics is excited to announce the hiring of Jeff Frykholm as the fourth Head Women's Soccer Coach in program history.

The move marks a reunion of sorts after Frykholm served as a Regis assistant coach during the 2021 season under Kelly Brown, who stepped down this spring to accept the role as Camp Director for the Steamboat Soccer Club.

"I am grateful for this opportunity to direct Regis University Women's Soccer.  Working last year with Coach Kelly Brown will always be a highlight in my coaching career.  I thank Kelly for inviting me into the Regis family.  I also wish to thank Athletic Director David Spafford and the other committee members for having confidence enough in my vision for the program to grant me the opportunity to lead it into the future," Frykholm said. "I look forward to joining the work being done here by so many quality colleagues across Regis Athletics. Most importantly, I want to thank the players who have been nothing short of remarkable during my time at Regis. Any program will always be defined by the quality of human beings on the roster, and I could not be more proud and grateful for the chance to continue building this program with this special group of players."

Frykholm is no stranger to Regis or the front range as he has been a staple in Colorado soccer for two decades, both at the club and high school level. For over 20 years, he held multiple club leadership roles with FC Boulder, including as the Executive Director, Director of Coaching, as well as Director of the US Soccer's Development Academy for the club.

"We had a very good pool of candidates and as we worked through the process, Jeff stood out with his wealth of knowledge about the game and care he has for the student athletes" said Assistant Vice President Director of Athletics David Spafford. "We are excited to have Jeff back as a Ranger."

At the high school level, Frykholm posted a career .794 winning percentage (89-21-2) with Fairview High School in Boulder across six seasons, earning a pair of Front Range League Coach of the Year honors during that time. Regularly ranked among the top teams in the state, the Fairview program rose as high as No. 5 in national rankings (USA Today Top 25).

"Throughout the years as a club coach and high school coach, I was able to encourage players to consider Regis because I knew of its quality and stability," Frykholm said. "I wouldn't say the program is a hidden gem because people know about it. But it's a sleeping giant. The potential is here to do some wonderful things."

Prior to his first stint with Regis in 2021, Frykholm spent two years as an assistant coach for the University of St. Thomas men's soccer team — a NCAA Division I program in the Summit League — and aided the Tommies to a 12-4-3 overall record in 2019.

He now inherits a Rangers team coming off a 2021 season that saw them finish 14-6 overall and advance all the way to the RMAC Tournament title game.

"We graduated some high-quality players and players who had been in the program a long time this year. But we also return a solid group of players who had a ton of playing and played a significant role during that run to the RMAC championship game," Frykholm said. "I'm really excited about the group we have coming back next year."

On-field success is just one of the areas Frykholm said he wants the Rangers to excel in. As a former two-sport athlete himself at Whitworth University, and a former tenured professor at the University of Colorado, Frykholm wants student-athletes under his tutelage to leave Regis with a holistic college experience.

"I've spent a good chunk of my professional career on college campuses, always having both feet in the academic world and an eye on athletics because that's my passion," Frykholm said. "Having three children of my own be student-athletes at different institutions has given me a perspective of what this experience can be and should be for student-athletes. Regis is a place that blends the things that are most important to me with strong, rich academics; a strong cultural identity as a university and campus; and then the opportunity to experience the joy of sport."
