Baer nets equalizer in 68th minute, Rangers earn 1-1 draw against Texas Women's

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team concluded its opening home stand of the 2022 season on Saturday, netting a second-half goal to earn a 1-1 draw against a talented Texas Women's University squad.

With the result, the Rangers (1-0-1 overall) complete a four-point home stand against two Lonestar Conference foes — Midwestern State University and Texas Women's) that defeated Regis in 2021.

"Bouncing back from not getting a point against these two teams last year to get four points this week is a big positive. We're just a little disappointed because we felt we gave a few portions of that game away," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We're still working on defining our identity and play through our system. But (TWU) gave us a ton of pressure and we weren't quite comfortable enough yet to play through some of that pressure."

How It Happened: The visiting Pioneers (0-1-1 overall) had the Rangers pinned in their own end much of the first half, pressuring high and forcing turnovers and errant passes when Regis attempted to turn upfield.

The pressure paid off in the 14th minute when Bri Luna was able to thread a crossing pass into Dylann Vollaro, who was just able to sneak a shot past RU senior goalkeeper, Katelyn Martin.

It would be the lone shot to get past Martin on Thursday as she turned in another strong performance with nine saves, giving her a total of 17 saves on 18 shots through the Rangers' first two games.

Martin would make three crucial stops at 37:57, 40:34 and right as the first half horn sounded to keep it a 1-0 game heading to the break.

"When things aren't going as well or as planned, you need a goalkeeper that is trustworthy, stable and confident in there to keep you in it," Frykholm said. "Katelyn exuded confidence and everything that came her way she did a great job gobbling it up.  I thought her and our back line in front of her did a great job keeping us in it, giving us a chance to find our footing."

Regis was able to do just that in the second half, finishing with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal and netting the all-important equalizer in the 68th minute. Sophomore midfielder Alex Baer found space along the weak side and made a tremendous individual run into the box and snuck a shot into the top-left corner past the TWU goalkeeper.

"We talked at halftime about finding the release on the weak-side and that's exactly where Alex found herself. She got the ball on her feet, with a lot of open space, and she's talented and athletic enough to take it upon herself right there," Frykholm said. "She was able to fend off a couple defenders and finished nicely. It was a wonderful individual effort. Those aren't the kinds of goals we want to depend on, but we'll certainly take it (Saturday)."

Game Notes: Regis finished with a 19-18 advantage in total shots, while TWU finished with a 10-7 lead in shots on goal.

Each team finished with five corner kick opportunities, with eight of the 10 combined corner kick opportunities coming in the first half.

The goal for Baer is her second career score in 20 games played.

"Our top goal scorers from last year in Kelby Kuo, Audrey Teague and Sarah Wynn, it just hasn't happened yet for them. So it has been great to see some other players step up these first two games and develop some more confidence," Frykholm said. "Having that secondary scoring and balance is super important as we keep working on putting our attack together."

Up Next: Regis will continue its string of matches against Texas foes next week when the team head out on the road for matchups against Texas A&M International (4 p.m. Friday) and Angelo State University (12:30 p.m. Sunday).
