Cullinan scores her first of 2022, but Rangers fall on the road against Texas A&M International

LAREDO, Texas — The Regis University women's soccer team opened a two-game road trip in Texas on Friday, losing a tight 2-1 contest to Texas A&M International University.

For the Rangers (1-1-1 overall), a slow start to the opening 45 minutes proved costly as the Dustdevils (2-0 overall) scored a goal in the 24th minutes to put RU in an early hole.

"It was kind of the same story for the third match in a row. We struggled early in the first half to establish ourselves against a quality opponent that put pressure on us," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We're just having a hard time right now establishing some rhythm and momentum in first halves. We played much better in the second half, scored the equalizer, but were unable to quite get over the hump."

HOW IT HAPPENED: After some sustained pressure, the Dustdevils netted the game's first goal at the 23:28 mark and enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the break.

Regis countered with the equalizer in the 48th minute when defenseman Madison Cullinan settled down a loose ball after a corner kick and tucked a shot just beneath the crossbar to pull the Rangers even at 1-1.

The goal was the first of 2022 for Cullinan and her second career score for the sophomore out of Gilbert, Arizona.

"Madison got on a second ball and showed some really nice finesse. In the midst of a crowd, she had a beautiful finish taking the only shot she really had available to her," Frykholm said. "It was a very heads up play by her."

Regis played with the momentum on its side for much of the second half, but were unable to net a go-ahead score. That left the door open for the Dustdevils, following a failed clear by the Rangers in their defensive half, to come back and steal the win after Stefanie Petrova scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 73rd minute.

"She got pinned in our end and, kind of like the first goal we gave up, we had some lack or urgency defending," Frykholm said. "We couldn't clear the ball out and to the Dustdevils' credit, (Petrova) finished very well for them on what was a rather innocuous moment that turned into a dangerous scoring chance."

GAME NOTES:
  • Each team finished with nine total shot attempts, while Texas A&M International held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Regis finished with a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore midfielder Alex Baer and senior defenseman Ella Palmer each logged a team-high two shot attempts.
  • Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Martin finished with a game-high five saves. She currently leads all RMAC goalkeepers with 22 saves through three games.

UP NEXT: The Rangers' conclude their Texas two-step with a Sunday matchup against No. 25 ranked Angelo State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (Mountain Time).
"We'll turn our eyes forward, learn from our first three games, and get ready to face a very good and tough opponent on Sunday," Frykholm said. "We can be a difficult opponent ourselves. We just need to put together a full match and I think our players are going to respond well and be ready to go."
