Rangers conclude non-conference schedule with home loss to Hawaii Hilo

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team concluded non-conference play on Monday, falling by a 3-0 final to the unbeaten University of Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans.

With the result, the Rangers sit at 1-4-1 overall heading into the RMAC regular season while the visiting Vulcans, the defending PacWest Conference champions, improved to 4-0 overall.

"It's kind of been the same narrative a couple games in a row where we've gotten down early and, after something becomes a pattern, it can be difficult to change your mentality. The girls have continued to fight. But against really good teams, you just can't afford to go down early," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "It has put us on the defensive early in games and we're focused on figuring out how to come out a little stronger with our best foot forward."

HOW IT HAPPENED: The early goal Frykholm eluded to came in the 11th minute of the first half as the Vulcans capitalized on a turnover in the midfield and Alyssa Padron was able to tuck a shot in the far corner of the net past a diving Katelyn Martin, who stopped four of the seven shots on goal she faced Monday.

With momentum firmly on their side, the Vulcans were able to produce another scoring chance in the 30th minute, capitalizing on a great touch pass by Nanea Wall to a streaking Teani Arakawa to put Hawaii Hilo up 2-0.

Hawaii Hilo added its final goal in the 69th minute and finished the evening with a 13-8 shots advantage.

Offensively, the Rangers put three shots on net — one apiece from Sarah Roman, Jillian Skurcenski and Audrey Teague — but struggled to apply sustained pressure in the offensive third.

"I think there is some second-guessing or doubt from our team when we have the ball about, 'How to get balls on frame on create scoring opportunities for ourselves,'" Frykholm said. "We've really struggled in that final third of the field the last few games."

UP NEXT: Regis will look to hit the reset button when it kicks off the 2022 RMAC regular season on Friday with a 1 p.m. road game against New Mexico Highlands University.

"We get to start over. We're 0-0 in conference and we just need to take the lessons learned from this non-conference portion of our schedule and apply them moving forward," Frykholm said. "The RMAC doesn't get any easier by any means. But we have players who know the RMAC well, know the rivalries, the opponents and the history. We're hopeful we'll be able to respond and start turning a corner."
