Rangers erupt for three second-half goals, roll to a 4-0 road win over N.M. Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University women's soccer team began RMAC play with a bang on Friday, scoring three second-half goals en route to a dominant 4-0 road win over New Mexico Highlands University.

"The win felt really good and was more of a relief than anything else; just to finally hit the back of the net do it confidently," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "It took us a half to sort of settle in and the players did a very nice job adjusting to the game. And then in the second half, we really put our stamp on it. Lot of enthusiasm, lot of smiles."

With the win, the Rangers (2-4-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) snapped a mini four-game skid and notched their first win of conference play, while the loss dropped New Mexico Highlands to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Regis struck first in the 10th minute when sophomore midfielder Claire Faulkner scored her first goal of 2022, finishing off a lead pass from junior midfielder Jillian Skurcenski.
"Claire played a great game (Friday) with a lot of composure in the midfield," Frykholm said. "It was a great goal, great finish by her. I was happy and proud of how she performed."

The Rangers maintained that 1-0 lead at the half before exploding for nine shots and three goals over the final 45 minutes to salt the game away.

Senior forward Kelby Kuo, who led all Rangers with 15 goals in 2021, netted her first score of the season in the 56th minute to up the lead to 2-0.

Fellow senior forward Audrey Teague would then put the game out of reach with goals in the 60th minute and 68th minutes — her first two goals of 2022 — to balloon the Rangers' lead to 4-0.

"It was great to see those two gets get on the scoresheet just given how talented they are and how hard goals had been to come by those first few weeks," Frykholm said of Kuo and Teague. "I think we put solid pressure on the ball and they are both great athletes. On each of their first goals, they were strong and confident with the ball and really powered themselves into an opportunity for the final touch across the line."

Freshman forward Natalie Bunch recorded her first collegiate point on Friday, as well, assisting on the second score by Teague.

GAME NOTES:
  • Regis finished the game with a 13-7 shots advantage, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
  • New Mexico Highlands was limited to two shots in the second half.
  • Regis held the Cowgirls off the stat sheet in corner kicks, finishing with a 3-0 advantage.
  • In net, freshman goalkeeper Grace Glover and junior Baileigh Baker made their season debuts for Regis. Baker earned the win, playing 72 minutes and recording three saves. Glover had one save in her 17 minutes.

UP NEXT: The Rangers conclude their road trip, and aim to come away with six points over the weekend, when they square off against Adams State University on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
"We certainly have our work cut out for us, on the road at their place. Adams State is a solid group that defends really well," Frykholm said. "It'll be a really big game for us as we look to build on the confidence we gained (Friday). The players feel good and positive so we're hoping that carries into Sunday."
