Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rangers dominate third quarter in win over CSU Pueblo

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team stretched their win streak to 10 on Friday night, defeating the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves, 75-63.

Regis (14-5 overall, 11-2 RMAC) outscored the visiting ThunderWolves (10-10 overall, 7-7 RMAC),40-28 in the second half and cruised to another home victory.

"We knew this was going to be a tough matchup tonight vs. a highly talented and athletic Pueblo team," said Regis women's head basketball coach, Molly Marrin. "We kept them under their average and limited their 3-point shooting under 30 percent so that was huge goal for us and our girls executed really well."

How It Happened: After a back-and-forth first half that saw the score tied at 35, the Rangers came out firing in the third quarter and made their move to take the lead.

CSU Pueblo is the third best three-point shooting team in the RMAC right now, with a .336 shooting percentage but the Rangers' defense was able to stifle the Pack's efforts to finish the night at .292.

Coupled with their defensive efforts, Regis went up by as many 16 at 58-42 with 1:35 remaining on a layup from senior forward Sam Deem to finish off a 17-7 run.

To support Deem's 16-point effort was senior guard Josey Ryan, who tied her career-high in points with 23. Ryan went 7-for-11 (.637) from the floor and nailed 50 percent (3-6) of her three-pointers.

"Josey is playing her best basketball right now and does so many things on both ends for us," said Marrin. "She is the ultimate competitor an incredible teammate. I truly respect her commitment to and love for the game."

The ThunderWolves would cut the lead down to as little as nine with 1:10 left in the game, but the Rangers would keep CSU Pueblo at an arm's reach the rest of the night en route to their 75-63 win.

Ryan's supporting offensive cast consisted of junior guard Erin Fry, who was one assist shy of a double-double and scored 17 points on the night.

Between the first and second half, Regis went from shooting 36.7 percent (11-30) from the field, to 54 percent (15-28).

"The players led the charge in the second half and it feels so good as a coach to watch them lead and trust each other that much. We wanted to come out with a better defensive mindset and we did. The players came up with that on their own, they're a very high basketball IQ group and I trust their insight," said Marrin.

Game Notes
  • Erin Stroberg finished the night with a game-high 14 rebounds
  • Both teams had two blocks during the matchup
  • Regis owned the lead for 90% of Friday's game

Up Next: The Rangers stay home on Saturday as they host the New Mexico Highlands Univeristy Cowgirls at 3 P.M. at the Regis Field House.

"NMHU is a young and scrappy team that is much improved from last year," said Marrin. "They have great patience offensively and some great playmakers so we will need to be locked in and focused defensively."
