Bunch nets her seventh of 2023, but Rangers fall by 3-1 final to No. 20 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team got off to a fast start, but were unable to hold on in its Sunday road matinee against No. 20 Colorado School of Mines, falling by a 3-1 final to the nationally ranked Orediggers.

For the Rangers (7-3 overall, 3-1 RMAC), the loss ends the squad's six-game winning streak while the victory improved the Orediggers to 6-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in RMAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a rematch of the 2022 RMAC Tournament championship game, the Rangers came out of the gates strong as they tallied the game's first goal just four minutes into the contest.

Fifth-year forward Kelby Kuo found sophomore Natalie Bunch along the near side top of the box and Bunch, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, found the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of 2023.

Colorado School of Mines would respond nine minutes later when Rubi Paola brought the Orediggers even at 1-1 at the 12:13 mark of the first half.

The two nearby rivals would stay deadlocked at 1-1 until the 49th minute in the second half when the Orediggers took their first lead of the game on a goal from Reese McDermott; her seventh of the season to tie Bunch for the RMAC lead.

Colorado School of Mines would add an insurance goal in the 84th minute to take a 3-1 lead, and Orediggers' goalkeeper Sadie Wolf made a pair of saves in the final five minutes to help CSM hold on for the 3-1 final.

GAME NOTES
  • Mines finished with a 23-9 advantage in total shots.
  • Regis held a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
  • Bunch, senior Jillian Skurcenski and freshman Gianna Sparaco led Regis with two shots apiece.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Arucan made five saves for the Rangers.
