Rangers erupt for three second-half goals, earn 3-0 road win over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team had three different goal scorers get on the scoresheet Friday, opening the weekend with a convincing 3-0 road win over Adams State University in an afternoon matinee down in Alamosa.

With the victory, the Rangers (8-3 overall, 4-1 RMAC) kept pace in the win column with RMAC leaders UCCS (6-2-2 overall, 4-0 RMAC) and moved to 3-1 overall on the team's current five-game road swing.

"It's a long trip and a 3 p.m. game is not something we're typically accustomed to doing, so it was a game that had the makings of being a challenging afternoon for us against a really pesky opponent," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "Given the difficulty of the trip, the opponent and everything, I was really proud of the players for how they stuck with it."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite holding a 7-0 shots advantage in the first half, the Rangers had to settle for a draw with the Grizzlies (2-5-3 overall, 1-4-1 RMAC) through the game's opening 45 minutes.

The sustained pressure by Regis would pay off in the second half, though, as the team rattled off all three of their goals in a mater of 13 minutes of game action, starting in the 51st minute when senior Stella Straubing netted her second goal of 2023 off a feed from freshman Madeline Gardner.

Almost exactly 10 minutes later, at the 60:43 mark, it was Gardner's turn to crack the scoring column for her fourth goal of the fall.

The Rangers weren't done as they added another insurance goal just three minutes later at the 63:40 mark when another freshman, midfielder Brooke Castillo, bumped the Regis lead to 3-0 with her second goal of the season.

"I think in the first half, we threw a lot of punches to the body sort of speak. We had moved the ball well side-to-side and we could see that some chances were starting to come for us," Frykholm said. "The talk at halftime was to figure out where the gaps where and to get there quickly and really apply some pressure early in the second half. I was really proud of how we came out to start that second half and a really good response from the players after a good first half."

In net, senior goalkeeper Baileigh Baker drew her first start of the season and stopped the lone shot on goal she faced to preserve the clean sheet. Friday's result marked the first career shutout for Baker — and the team's fourth of 2023 — as well as her second career win.

"I was really happy to give Baileigh the opportunity to run that game. She works so hard in training and we have three really competent goalkeepers who are very similar to one another. It was her turn and she took advantage of the opportunity," Frykholm said. "She was composed, calm, mistake free and played how you'd expect from someone with her experience. She didn't have to face too much, but what she did face she handled cleanly. I was proud of her organization and communication in the back."

  • Regis finished the day with a 12-2 shots advantage, including an 11-1 mark in shots on goal.
