Regis caps road trip with 9-2 rout of New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Regis University women's soccer team capped its five-game road swing in grand fashion on Sunday, erupting for a season-high nine goals in a 9-2 drubbing of New Mexico Highlands University.

Regis (9-3 overall, 5-1 RMAC) had five different goal scorers on the afternoon, led by the first career hat trick by sophomore forward Natalie Bunch. The nine goals against the Cowgirls (0-8-2 overall, 0-5-1 RMAC) are tied for the fifth most in a single game in program history; last accomplished on Sept. 19, 2008 against Adams State University.

"It was a great feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net. We spent a lot of the first half trying to figure out their offside trap. But we made some adjustments at half time that really emphasized second runners," said Regis head coach, Jeff Frykholm. "Sure enough, we were able to get 4-5 really good opportunities pretty quickly to start the second half that led to goals. It was another really good adjustment made by our players."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis got on the scoreboard in the 14th minute on an own-goal. And would enjoy a 3-0 lead at the halftime break after senior Stella Straubing and Bunch each netted their first scores of the afternoon in the 17th minute and 21st minute, respectively.

While the 3-0 advantage at the break was massive, the Rangers were called for seven offsides that thwarted additional scoring opportunities through the opening 45 minutes.

Following some halftime adjustments, the Regis attack was firing on all cylinders in the second half as the team scored six goals in a matter of just eight minutes of game clock.

Fifth-year forward Kelby Kuo got the second-half scoring started, while Bunch tallied the next two goals in the 57th and 58th minute, respectively, to polish off her first career hat trick.

Regis sophomore forward Madeline Gardner, who scored four goals over the weekend after netting two goals Friday at Adams State, found the back of the net in the 59th minute and 64th minute — pending official stat corrections — to cap her sensational weekend.

"Dynamic is a great word to describe both of them," Frykholm said of Gardner and Bunch, who combined for seven goals over the weekend. "Natalie was busy hunting opportunities, playing aggressive and relentless. Which is another great word to describe Maddie. She has such a high motor and fights off one, two and sometimes three defenders. She's difficult to defend and deny."

Capping the Rangers' scoring on Sunday was freshman forward Elsa Nolen as she notch the first goal of her career in the 59th minute, as well.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished the afternoon with a 17-5 shots advantage, including a 14-3 mark in shots on goal.
  • In addition to her hat trick, Bunch added one assist to finish the afternoon with a career-high seven total points.
  • Straubing added the Rangers' second assist of the day to finish with three total points.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover drew the start and earned the victory, not allowing a goal and stopping the one shot she faced in 30 minutes of action.
UP NEXT
The Rangers conclude their five-game road trip with a 4-1 record and now prepare for their longest home stand of the regular season; a four-game stint that begins next week against CSU Pueblo (7 p.m. Thursday) and (RV) University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (1 p.m. Sunday).

It'll be a crucial homestand for Regis as the team currently sits second in the RMAC standings and is challenging for the RMAC regular season crown against UCCS (7-2-2 overall, 5-0 RMAC) and No. 4 Colorado Mesa (9-0 overall, 4-0 RMAC).

"We talked about it after the game that this road trips represents the end of another portion of our season. We have divided the season into a couple portions and now we're turning the corner into that last one in the regular season," Frykholm said. "There are so many quality teams in the RMAC and we have games coming up against a couple of them. We're one of those teams right now fighting to have control over our playoff destiny. It was a great effort during these five games on the road. But now we need to hit the reset button and defend our home pitch. All the positive things we've done so far has built a foundation. Now the hardest work of the season comes in these next few weeks."
