Rangers open home stand with 2-0 clean sheet against CSU Pueblo

DENVER, Colo. — Not even 40-degree temperatures and gusting winds could slow down the (RV) Regis University women's soccer team on Thursday as the team opened a four-game home stand with a 2-0 clean sheet against Colorado State University Pueblo.

With the win, the Rangers (10-3 overall, 6-1 RMAC) have now won three straight and nine of their past 10 while keeping pace with the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (8-2-2 overall, 6-0 RMAC) for first in the RMAC standings with 18 points.

"There definitely was a little different feel in the air and it was great to be back home after being out on the road the last five matches. I thought the way we came out in the first half was some of the best soccer we've played so far this year," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We were creating some great chances, the flow and energy was great, and I felt like it was some of our most cohesive play thus far."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers, who entered play tied for the lead in the RMAC for goals scored at 3.00 per game, dominated the shot attempts in the first half, 14-3. They'd break through for their first goal in the 28th minute, courtesy of a sensational individual effort from freshman Madeline Gardner.

Fresh off her first RMAC Offensive Player of the Week award, Gardner netted her fifth goal of the past three games after shedding off multiple defenders, creating space, and firing a rocket off her left foot past a diving CSU Pueblo goalkeeper.

"She had players draped all over her and twice during that possession I thought she may go down, but she kept on fighting through it," Frykholm said. "Then to be composed enough to make that left-footed bending shot was really beautiful. It was the reward for so much work and effort."

Regis would carry that 1-0 lead into the break, and nurse it much of the second half as CSU Pueblo pushed back and played the final 45 minutes even with the Rangers, with shot attempts deadlocked at 7-7.

The Rangers would break through for the all-important insurance goal in the 90th minute, though, when freshman Brooke Castillo stole the ball in the attacking third to get the fast break started.

Castillo fed fifth-year forward Kelby Kuo, who had her initial shot attempt saved, leaving an easy rebound attempt for junior Sarah Wynn to clean up for her fifth goal of 2023.

"I thought Brooke's tackle in that moment was super courageous, clean and hard. She won that ball and it was basically a 2-0," Frykholm said. "Kelby did what she was suppose to do, drove straight at the goal, and Sarah did what we always talk about with hunting the ball, staying in the play and pursing the rebound. I think the three of them all played a big role in getting that goal."

While the Regis attack continued its strong play, the Rangers' defensive unit also put together an impressive performance to put a bow on the team's five shutout of the fall.

Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover earned her fifth win of the season, and first solo shutout, after stopping all eight shots on goal she faced behind the back line of junior Madison Cullinan, seniors Sophia Leone and Sam Murray, and junior Alyssa Granno.

"We challenged the team this week on the defensive side of things. We've been scoring a lot of goals and entered the week leading the RMAC in goals scored, but ranked fourth from the bottom in goals against. So we challenged ourselves this week to tighten it up, defensively," Frykholm said. "I thought the players responded really well. Grace handled everything that came her way while the back line was organized and really kept CSU Pueblo off Grace for the most part."

UP NEXT
The Rangers will use Saturday to rest up and prepare for a pivotal Sunday matchup against co-RMAC leaders UCCS and a homecoming for UCCS head coach J.B. Belzer, the Regis women's soccer program all-time wins leader with 316 from 1996 through 2019.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Regis Turf Fields.

"Sunday is going to be a great game. UCCS is such a good team, they can score in a hurry, they're very athletic and very well organized and coached in their system," Frykholm said. "And obviously, it's a special match because of the legacy J.B. left behind. He is a huge part of Regis soccer and now he's building another program. It's going to be a great match between two really good teams trying to claw their way to the top of the RMAC."
