RMAC leaders play each other to a 2-2 draw on Sunday

DENVER, Colo. — In a matinee featuring the co-leaders of the RMAC standings, the (RV) Regis University women's soccer team and (RV) University of Colorado-Colorado Springs lived up to the billing, playing each other to a 2-2 draw Sunday at the Regis Turf Fields in Denver.

With the tie, the Rangers (10-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 RMAC) and the Mountain Lions (8-2-3 overall, 6-0-1- RMAC) remain deadlocked atop the RMAC standings at 19 points, now joined by No. 5 ranked Colorado Mesa University (11-0-1 overall, 6-0-1 RMAC) after its win Sunday against Western Colorado.

"We knew it was going to be a battle and it ended up being an awesome game. You don't play in matches like that very often, so we were grateful for the chance to do it," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "In some ways, it is disappointing to tie. But on the other hand, that was probably the best team we've played against all year and our players fought extremely hard."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sunday's game was a tale of two halves for both teams, with the Rangers applying the pressure and controlling the opening 45 minutes.

Regis got on the scoreboard first in the 35th minute, sparked by a fine defensive play from freshman midfielder Taylor Brown. Brown forced a UCCS turnover on a clear attempt and put the ball in space for junior forward Sarah Wynn, who then delivered a perfect cross to senior Jillian Skurcenski at the back post; Skurcenski's first goal of 2023.

Not content with the 1-0 lead, the Rangers continued to apply the pressure late in the first half and were again able to force a turnover in the UCCS defending third. And again it would be Wynn who delivered a perfect ball into the box, this time finding sophomore midfielder Cadence Fisher – her second goal of the fall — with just six seconds remaining in the half.

Brown, Wynn, Skurcenski and Fisher combined for six total points all coming off the bench Sunday.

"We had great support off the bench today. The whole bench unit was awesome and played with great energy. To get two goals and two assists from the bench is tremendous production," Frykholm said. "We've talked a lot about the quality of our depth and being ready for your moment, so I'm very, very pleased with the way those young ladies and others played, especially in the first half."

UCCS would not go away quietly, though, as the Mountain Lions climbed right back in the ballgame early in the second half, scoring their first goal in the 54th minute.

The Mountain Lions continued to apply the pressure, finishing with a 9-3 shots advantage over the final 45 minutes, and were finally able to pull back even with the Rangers with a score in the 79th minute.

"I think the difference between the two halves was where the game was played. We were able to get a little higher pressure in the first half, which led to some turnovers and scoring opportunities," Frykholm said. "In the second half, with us trying to protect a 2-0 lead, I think maybe subconsciously we dropped a little bit and we were having to defend more in our end."

GAME NOTES
  • UCCS finished the game with an 18-7 shots advantage, while each team each posted six shots on goal.
  • Regis sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover made four saves.
  • Sunday marked a rematch of the 2023 RMAC Tournament semi-final. Regis won that game, 3-2, down in Colorado Springs.
UP NEXT
Regis will continue its four-game home stand next weekend with matchups against Western Colorado (4 p.m. Friday) and Fort Lewis College (1 p.m. Sunday), which will serve as Senior Day for the Rangers.

"We'll regroup and get prepared now for another two tough matches next week," Frykholm said. "Senior Day at the end of the weekend is always a special and emotional day. This senior group has been through so much. We really want to celebrate them and make sure the soccer we play this weekend is worthy of a Senior Day. I know our players will be hungry to play these next two matches."
