No. 12 Rangers hit a season-best .489, knock off Western Colorado to conclude the weekend

DENVER, Colo. — Squaring off against a pesky Western Colorado University squad, the No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team produced runs of exceptional play, and was able to grind through a tough second set, in a 25-16, 28-26 and 25-10 sweep of the Mountaineers.

Regis improves to 15-4 overall and 8-1 in the RMAC standings, remaining just a half-game back of conference leaders No. 9 Colorado Mesa with five RMAC matches remaining.

"It was exactly what we needed today. We needed to come out and play our game, which we were able to do. And then we got challenged in that second set and I have to give a lot of credit to Western. They're very scrappy," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "I know they are battling through some injuries, so for them to play that hard with nothing to lose, I thought that was good on their part and good for us to go through that, as well. I thought we rebounded well from it in the third set."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis opened the match with a decisive 25-16 win in the first set, racking up 17 kills versus just two attack errors to hit an even .600 as a team.

Graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink produced six of her team-high 12 kills in Set One, highlighting an evening where she hit .625 and scored a team-high 14 points after adding four block assists.

The Rangers would hit a snag in the second set, however, as four service errors, four attack errors and a couple serve receive errors sprinkled in helped open the door for the Mountaineers (4-16 overall, 2-8 RMAC).

Western Colorado produced 14 of its 28 kills on the night during the set and had three opportunities at Set Point.

The Rangers were able to rise to the occasion, finishing the set on a 3-0 burst to seal the 28-26 final, with kills courtesy of Klaudia Sowizral and Amelia Davis, as well as a combined block by the duo on Set Point.

"I could feel everyone asking themselves, 'Why hasn't he called a timeout yet?' But there are times during a season where a team needs to define themselves. We've been close a few times at that, but I thought today would be a good time for us to figure out how to get through these things," List said, referring to letting his team play through the struggles of Set Two. "There are going to be times where I might be out of timeouts at that point in the set, so how are we going to handle it? It was a little risky business, but I learned a lot that the team can take over themselves. It was good to see them do that, win the set in extra points, and then to see how we rebounded in that third set."

Regis would carry that momentum over into Set Three, opening on an 8-1 run and smashing a match-best 18 kills on a .643 hitting percentage en route to the 25-10 win.
