No. 12 Rangers get off to fast start, but fall to No. 11 Colorado Mesa to conclude regional power pod

DENVER, Colo. — Wrapping up a 48-hour window of high-caliber volleyball, the No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team had to settle for a 1-1 split during regional power pod play, falling by a 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 final to No. 11 Colorado Mesa on Friday inside the Auraria Event Center.

Regis (16-5 overall, 8-1 RMAC), which opened pod action with a resounding sweep of hosts No. 7 ranked MSU Denver, got off to a fast start, but were unable to cool off a red-hot Mavericks squad (20-2 overall, 9-2 RMAC) that would produce 46 kills and hit .312 for the evening.

"I thought we came out prepared and you could tell from the start of that first set, building our seven-point lead. But after that, Colorado Mesa went on a big run and we were on our heels playing catch-up," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "Colorado Mesa was able to score a lot of our block, which is what they were able to do in our first meeting against them which was a little frustrating. They did the same thing and we didn't adjust."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers got off to a fantastic start in Set One, opening on a 5-1 run and growing their lead to 17-10 at one point. Unfortunately for Regis, the Mavericks would counter with a 10-0 haymaker to take their first lead of the set and build a 20-17 advantage.

Regis committed five attack errors during that 10-0 run for CMU, flipping the script on what would be a 25-23 win for the Mavericks.

CMU, which ranked 11th in the RMAC at 1.71 blocks per set, was able to edge the Rangers, the top blocking team in the RMAC (2.69 blocks per set) by a 10-6 margin on Friday.

"Colorado Mesa did a good job of taking away some of the strengths of our attackers with their block and we didn't adjust quickly enough to that," List said. "That's where a lot of the block differential happened."

Colorado Mesa was able to carry that momentum into the second set, going up 2-0 with a 25-17 win.

The Rangers fought back in the third set as they opened on a 4-0 burst, aided by two service aces from graduate student libero Haley Kennedy; two of the Rangers' seven aces on the night.

Regis produced another 6-0 run midway through the set, turning a 16-11 deficit into a 17-16 lead capped on another ace, this time by freshman defensive specialist Elie King for one of her team-high three aces.

The Mavericks would weather the storm, though, and held on for a 25-23 win to clinch the match.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral led all Rangers with 10 kills, followed by fellow graduate student Nadine Burbrink with nine kills.
  • The Rangers' offense finished the evening with 37 kills, 20 attack errors and a .156 hitting percentage.
  • Regis dominated the service stripe with a 7-0 advantage in service aces.
  • Kennedy led the Regis back row with 12 digs.
UP NEXT
Regis will resume RMAC conference play on Tuesday when it travels to face the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

While Friday's loss to the Mavericks was disappointing, the Rangers are still in prime position to challenge for the RMAC regular season and tournament hosting rights as they head into the final five-match stretch of the regular season tied atop the standings with MSU Denver.

"Learning from our mistakes was the message after tonight. We have three matches against good opponents next week, so that'll be taxing physically on us and we'll need to do a good job taking care of ourselves," List said. "We've talked about as a team having that 'switch' when we're facing adversity so next week will be an opportunity for us to flip that switch."
