No. 12 Rangers produce 52 kills in road sweep of Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team opened its final road trip of the regular season in fine fashion, racking up 52 kills on an efficient .328 hitting percentage in a Friday night sweep of Adams State University.

For the Rangers (19-6 overall, 11-2 RMAC), the 52 kills are the most for the team in a three-set match this season while the victory over the Grizzlies (8-17 overall, 4-9 RMAC) guarantees Regis no worse than a fourth-place finish in the RMAC standings and a home playoff match next Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the RMAC Tournament.

"Knowing that there is still playoff seeing on the line, and knowing that a team like Adams is going to be really feisty in their last home stand of the season, I thought our team did a good job playing our game," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "We had to fight through some adversity in the second set when things we tight. And I thought Mara (LeGrand) did a great job orchestrating our offense throughout the entire match."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers opened the evening with a convincing 25-15 win in the first set, smashing an even .400 with 18 kills versus four errors on 35 total swings.

Holding a 12-9 lead, Regis broke the set open with a 5-0 scoring run — three points coming courtesy of Hannah Kepler kills — to build a comfortable 17-9 cushion.

Adams State, the third best blocking team in the RMAC (2.13 BPS) behind No. 8 MSU Denver and the Rangers, would fight back in the second set. Regis was held to a .157 hitting percentage and committed eight attack errors, leaving the door cracked for the Grizzlies to potential steal a set.

ASU held a lead as late as 22-21, but the Rangers offense was able to buckle down and play error-free down the stretch, retaking the lead on kills from graduate student right side Klaudia Sowizral at 23-22 and 24-23 before earning the 25-23 win via a service ace from graduate student libero, Haley Kennedy.

"We knew Adams State had a good block, so during training this week we wanted to make sure we were running some offense that loosened up the block and were able to take advantage of it in certain spots," List said. "Mara did a great job orchestrating all that, setting certain people at the right times, and we were then able to really expose it in the third set."

Following the tight win in the second set, the Rangers put a bow on the sweep with a quick and efficient 25-12 win in Set Three where they hit a match-best .515 with 18 kills and just one error on 33 attempts.

Sowizral led all players with 13 kills and was joined by Kepler in double-figures with 11. Senior outside hitter Halle Theis (nine kills), and the middle blocker tandem of Amelia Davis (eight kills) and Nadine Burbrink (eight kills) all had productive evenings for the Regis offense.

Guiding the ship, graduate student setter Mara LeGrand posted 43 assists, two kills and 11 digs to cap her well-rounded evening.

LeGrand was one of three Regis players to post double-digit dig totals, led by Kennedy with 17 digs and junior defensive specialist Bre Skala with 13 digs.

UP NEXT
Regis will conclude the 2023 regular season at 6 p.m. Saturday on the road against Colorado State University Pueblo to determine which team will be the No. 3 seed for next week's RMAC Tournament, which gets underway Tuesday with quarterfinal action.

"It's a difficult place to play. It'll be their Senior Day and final home match. And they have some big, athletic players," List said of CSU Pueblo. "They are a dangerous team so we need to make sure we take care of our side of things and know they are going to make some great plays. We just have to continue with our game plan when those sorts of things happen."
