Dominant defense lifts No. 11 ranked Rangers to sweep of Chadron State in RMAC Tournament quarterfinals

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 11 ranked and third-seeded Regis University volleyball team opened postseason play with a statement, cruising to a 25-13, 25-19 and 25-18 sweep of No. 6 seed Chadron State College in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Regis (21-6 overall) were dominant, defensively, as it held the visiting Eagles (15-12 overall) to just 20 kills on the night and a negative hitting percentage (-.052); the lowest hitting percentage allowed by the Rangers in 2023.

"We told the team afterwards that 'I like postseason Regis.' We came out and dominated and when we made some errors, I thought we handled those errors really well and stayed aggressive," said Regis head volleyball coach, Joel List. "Chadron State is very feisty and we knew that going into it and they made it a very fun match to play. I thought we did a great job with our block to get them out of system."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers never trailed on Tuesday, leaning on a defense that came into the evening leading the RMAC — and ranking third overall in the country for Division II — at 2.77 blocks per set.

Regis finished the night with a 14-7 advantage in blocks, six of which came in the 25-13 opening set victory.

Graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink and junior middle blocker Amelia Davis paced the way with seven total blocks apiece, while graduate student setter Mara LeGrand was close behind with six blocks to go with her team-high 12 digs and 30 assists.

Burbrink added to her special night — her last home game inside the Regis Field House — with a team-high 11 kills. She didn't commit a single attack error on her 19 swings, posting a team-best .579 attack percentage.

"Nadine does a great job of being able to do anything with what the set gives her. Mara did a great job of forcing the middles tonight and to not have any errors on 19 attempts — that's the same amount of attempts as an outside hitter — says a lot about Nadine's work ethic and volleyball IQ," List said. "And that just loosened things up all over the front row if Nadine and Amelia do a great job of putting the ball away."

Davis followed Burbrink with eight kills on a .313 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Halle Theis added eight kills and graduate student right-side hitter Klaudia Sowizral posted six kills, no errors and a sparking .545 hitting percentage.

Across the back row, the Rangers also finished the evening with a 41-28 advantage in digs, led by LeGrand's 12 from the setter position and graduate student libero Haley Kennedy also in double-figures with 10.

UP NEXT
With the victory, the Rangers advance to Friday's RMAC Tournament semi-finals, which will be held at Auraria Event Center and hosted by No. 1 seed MSU Denver.

Regis is set to square off against No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa University, the No. 10 ranked team in the country. An official start time for Friday's match has not yet been announced by the RMAC.

The Mavericks have earned wins over Regis on Oct. 14 (3-1) and Oct. 27 (3-0) in the two previous matchups this season, but the Rangers are hungry for Friday's opportunity.

"We're taking things one match at a time. We were very focused on Chadron State and now we'll turn our focus to Colorado Mesa, which we've played twice and all the sets were really close," List said. "We have some different wrinkles that we were able to work on since the last time we played them so we're looking forward to another matchup."
