LeGrand joins 4,000 assists club, No. 12 Rangers roll to sweep of Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — Behind a dominant performance at the net, the No. 12 ranked Regis University volleyball team notched its second win of the week on Friday, producing a season-high 14 blocks in a 25-21, 25-14 and 25-16 sweep of Colorado School of Mines.

With the victory, the Rangers (18-5 overall, 10-1 RMAC) maintained their half-game lead over No. 8 MSU Denver (17-5 overall, 9-1 RMAC) heading into their pivotal showdown at 3 p.m. Saturday inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

"It was a pretty clean match. A couple hiccups here and there and Mines is a good team that always does some things that make you struggle, but we adjusted and were able to get the win," said Regis head coach, Joel List. "We hadn't won in Golden since 2019, so it feels good to be able to go in there and get a win against a traditionally really good program knowing things were on the line going into (Saturday)."

HOW IT HAPPENED
In what was a rematch of last year's NCAA Division II South Central regional quarterfinal, the Orediggers and Rangers traded punches in the opening set, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead en route to the score being deadlocked late in the set at 20-20.

Regis would close Set One on a 5-1 run, though, sparked by two kills from middle blocker Nadine Burbrink and a set-sealing kill by outside hitter Halle Theis to go up 1-0.

The Rangers were never threatened from that point as the team cruised to set victories of 25-14 and 25-16, respectively, as the Regis front line wreaked havoc on the Orediggers.

Regis would finish the evening with a blistering .346 team hitting percentage, committing just six attack errors in 78 total swings, while on the defensive side of the ball the Rangers posted a season-high 14 blocks, dominating the blocking battle 14-2.

Junior middle blocker Amelia Davis led the charge with eight total blocks (2 solo, 6 block assists), while Theis followed with two solo blocks and three block assists and graduate student setter Mara LeGrand added four block assists of her own.

"It was really exciting to see because we worked on our block all week in practice," List said. "I didn't think that we blocked well last week, so I'm proud of the team for being able to adjust to what we were trying to work on all week in sealing up our block."

The four block assists and six digs on Friday for LeGrand ended up being just a footnote on what was a historic night for the Regis setter as, after posting 29 assists, she became just the seventh player in program history to eclipse 4,000 career assists (4,002).

"Her first year here, she was a defensive specialist so to able to reach that milestone knowing she's really only been a setter for 3 ½ years, counting the shortened Covid season, is a testament to her IQ as a setter and her ability to find her hitters," List said. "She's athletic and has the ability to make plays. She works really hard on making herself better at the position and I think these types of accolades come when you're like that."

GAME NOTES
  • Burbrink led all Rangers with nine kills on a .471 hitting percentage.
  • Davis added to her big night with five kills and no attack errors, finishing with a match-high .556 hitting percentage.
  • Graduate student libero Haley Kennedy led the Regis back row with nine digs.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will now have a quick turnaround to prepare for a pivotal match on Saturday against No. 8 ranked MSU Denver, with the winner taking over the driver seat to win the RMAC regular season title with just one week remaining in the regular season.

First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, while the Rangers' Senior Day ceremony will be held on the court following the conclusion of the match.

"It couldn't have been scripted much better, right? We're all excited for this match, to give it all we've got, and to honor our four graduating players," List said. "We're expecting a big crowd, so it should be a fun and exciting environment for everyone with some great volleyball."
