DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team took on the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets on Friday in a rematch against two squads that faced each other in the first round of the 2023 NCAA tournament.
The Rangers (5-2 overall, 0-1 RMAC) put up a 32-point second quarter, but were unable to stop the Yellow Jackets (4-1 overall, 1-0 RMAC) in the 64-54 conference-opener loss.
"Credit to Black Hills on a good defensive game," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin." "We played extremely hard and dove on the 50/50 balls well. The points in the paint were tough to handle for us, but we competed extremely hard so I'm proud of our team. We know we need to win the rebounding battle and that was tough to overcome for the win. At the end of the day, we needed to convert on some defensive stops."
How It Happened: The Rangers went down early in the first quarter, but were able to tie it at nine at the 4:07 mark thanks to a driving layup from senior guard Erin Fry.
BHSU added an additional four points to go up four, but back-to-back scores including a last second three-pointer from redshirt sophomore Pearle Green ended the first, 14-13.
After the second, the Rangers were up 32-31.
Almost halfway through the third, Regis had inflated their lead to as many as five points, but were unable to stop the Yellow Jackets as they added 21 points to Regis' 11.
In the fourth, the Rangers held BHSU to only 12 points, but BHSU's performance in the third proved to be the difference maker as Regis suffered its first conference loss.
"Our shots weren't falling. Ultimately this loss falls on me and I need to figure out how to guard the paint better," Marrin said. "Our team played extremely hard and it's an effort I'm proud of."
Fry led all Rangers in points with 13, while graduate student guard Josey Ryan grabbed the most boards amongst the Rangers with 11.
Game Notes:
- BHSU won the rebounds battle, 48-34
- Erin Fry led all Rangers in assists with four
- Erin Fry also led all Rangers in steals with four
Up Next: The Rangers finish their weekend at the Regis Field House on Saturday against South Dakota School of Mines at 3 PM.
"We know we have back-to-back games and we have to have a quick reset," said Marrin. "Our team has the toughness to do that."
