Rangers get off to strong start, but fall by 77-73 final on the road to Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. — The Regis University men's basketball team opened its final road trip of 2023 out in Nebraska on Saturday, falling by a narrow 77-73 final to Chadron State College inside the Chicoine Center.

With the loss, the Rangers (5-5 overall, 2-3 RMAC) slip back to .500 on the season, while the Eagles (6-4 overall, 4-1 RMAC) surge into fourth place in the current RMAC standings with their third straight conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis controlled the opening 20 minutes on Friday, storming out to a 16-3 lead through the game's first 5:40 following a steal by freshman guard Ty Cox and a fast-break dunk from fellow freshman Jalen Brown at the 14:20 mark.

After the Eagles inched back within five, sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon capped a strong first half for Regis with a mid-range jumper at the buzzer to send the Rangers into the halftime locker rooms with a 38-31 lead.

Unfortunately for Regis, the hometown Eagles were able to find their stride, offensively, in the second half as Chadron State shot 57 percent (20-for-35) from the field, with 18 of those field goals coming from inside the 3-point arc, to methodically work their way back into the contest.

Chadron State pulled even with the Rangers at 48-48, capping a 13-2 burst between the 17:39 and 13:28 marks of the second half. And took its first lead of the game at 53-50 with 11:45 remaining.

Regis would hang tough, owning its last lead of the game at 59-57 following a pair of free throws from Cox with 7:39 remaining for two of his 14 points on the night, but the Eagles responded with a 7-0 burst over the next 90 seconds to recapture a 64-59 lead.

After trailing by as many as seven points in the final minutes, the Rangers inched all the way back to 75-73 with nine seconds left, but Chadron State was able to salt the game away at the free throw line on the ensuing possession to hold on for the 77-73 final.

Cox and junior guard Trey Bryant would pace four Rangers in double-figures with 14 points apiece, while Brown and Mayo Harmon each followed with 13 points.

GAME NOTES
  • Cox finished just two rebounds shy of a double-double, leading all Regis players with eight boards.
  • Freshman forward Olafur Styrmisson had a well-rounded evening, finishing with eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals from the center position.
  • Regis won the turnover battle, 12-7, while the seven turnovers were a season-low.
  • The Rangers shot 43.5% (30-for-69) from the field and 4-for-18 (22%) from 3-point range.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will conclude the fall semester portion of their schedule at 4 p.m. Sunday when they take on nearby rival Colorado Christian University in Lakewood.
Regis swept the season series against the Cougars in 2022-23, which included an 81-80 buzzer-beater last December inside the CCU Event Center.
