Rangers dominate first half, end 2023 with a 75-62 road win over CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Regis University men's basketball team closed out 2023 in style on Sunday, storming out to a 30-point lead early en route to a 75-62 road win over nearby rivals Colorado Christian University in its final game of the fall semester.

With the victory, Regis (6-5 overall, 3-3 RMAC) moves back above .500 on the season and marked the Rangers third straight victory against Colorado Christian (5-6 overall, 2-4 RMAC) dating back to last December.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Unlike the two teams' last meeting in Lakewood, an 81-80 buzzer-beating victory for the Rangers last December, there would not be much drama to Sunday's contest as Regis dominated the opening 20 minutes.

The Rangers took their first double-digit lead with a 10-0 burst between the 15:11 and 11:26 marks of the first half to go up 22-8 following a 3-pointer from junior guard Trey Bryant.

Regis followed that up with a dominant eight-minute stretch where the Rangers defense held Colorado Christian without a field goal between the 10:49 and 2:05 marks, outscoring the Cougars, 19-0, during that stretch to build its largest lead of the game at 43-13.

"Our kids came out with tremendous energy from the start and I loved the way we set time early," said Regis head men's basketball coach, Brady Bergeson. "Give CCU some credit, they didn't go away. Their pressure gave us some issues in the second half, but our guys stayed the course and defended well throughout the game."

The Rangers would end up going into the halftime locker rooms with a 43-16 lead, limiting Colorado Christian to just 30 percent (6-for-20) shooting from the field.

Offensively, Regis was led by graduate student forward Tarig Eisa as he scored a season-high 15 points off the bench — 11 of which came during the Rangers' run in the first half — on efficient 6-for-8 shooting.

Eisa was joined in double-figures by freshman guard Jalen Brown, who poured in 14 points in his second career start, and sophomore guard Chase Mayo Harmon with 13 points to go with five rebounds and a team-high four steals.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis shot 46.4% (13-for-28) in the first half and 42.6% (20-for-47) from the field for the game.
  • The two teams combined to shot 69 free throws on Sunday.
  • The Rangers converted 26-of-36 (72%) at the charity stripe, while CCU finished 20-for-33 (60.6%).
  • Redshirt junior guard Eddy Egun had a strong performance off the bench as he scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and led all Rangers with three assists in his 17 minutes.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will now get a few weeks off to enjoy winter break and fine-tune things in practice before they open 2024 with a home conference game against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Tuesday, January 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside the Regis Field House.
