CHADRON, Neb. – The Regis University women's basketball team opened their weekend in explosive fashion on Saturday, pouring in 31 points in the first quarter and cruising to an 83-48 win over the Chadron State College Eagles.
Regis' (8-3 overall, 3-2 RMAC) 31 points in the first quarter was triggered by a 18-7 scoring run over the Eagles (3-6 overall, 1-4 RMAC) for over half of the 10-minute period.
"Our mindset coming off a very tough loss last weekend was on another level," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin. "We were focused, aggressive and played great team basketball on both ends. I'm most impressed with the resilience and response this group has demonstrated after tough games."
How It Happened: A jump shot from graduate student guard Sam Deem set the Rangers off on their offensive rampage as Diercks and La Vista-native Josey Ryan sunk back-to-back two-points shots no less than 30 seconds apart.
In the first quarter alone, the Rangers shot 82.4% (14-for-17) from the floor to the Eagles' 41.7% (5-for-12), led by Diercks and senior guard Erin Fry who went a perfect 3-for-3.
Over the next two quarters, Regis' offensive prowess continued with another 32 points across the second and third quarters with a 36% shooting percentage (10-for-28).
In the fourth, Regis inflated its lead to as many as 35, a team-high on the season, while the defense put in work and held the Eagles to only nine points and had a total of 18 stops in the final 10.
In addition to their 18 stops in the fourth, the Rangers' defense kept showing off as it not only outrebounded the Eagles, 43-27, but also converted those rebounds into 21 total second chance points.
Game Notes:
-
Madison Diercks led all Rangers in points with 16, with Josey Ryan just behind her with 15
-
10 of Regis' 12 players had at least two rebounds, with Madison Diercks and Josey Ryan leading those 10 players with six rebounds a piece
-
Regis won the blocking battle, 4-3, and those four blocks are a season high for the Rangers
Up Next: The Rangers take on the Colorado Christian Cougars on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
"We are well matched and play very similar to CCU so it will be a great matchup. They are very balanced and are playing really well this season," Marrin said.
