Rangers split doubleheader with Hilltoppers, earn first run-rule win of the season

AUSTIN, Tex. – The Regis University softball team finished its last leg of their Texas tour on Saturday, splitting another road doubleheader against St. Edward's University.

The Rangers (3-7 overall) showed out in dominating fashion in Game One, 9-1, but fell to the hometown Hilltoppers (6-3 overall) in Game Two, 3-0.

Sophomore Kylie Harpman (W, 3-2) struck out eight over the 5.2 innings pitched, while senior Abby Covington threw the remaining two outs to secure the six-inning run-rule win. Eight of the nine hitters in Regis' lineup recorded at least one hit with Miia Campos and Rachel Williams leading all Rangers with two apiece.

How It Happened | Game One: After a quiet first inning down in Austin, the Rangers offense came to life with a four-run second inning.

Freshman outfielder Olivia Wick got the inning started as she reached on a walk while fellow first-year Megan Clark moved her over with a groundout to second.

The freshman production trend continued as freshman designated player Sienna Reed singled to push Wick across the plate for Regis's first run. Junior Katherine Raper continued the hitting party with a double of her own to record an RBI and scored Reed to make it 2-0.

An error from St. Edward's first baseman put graduate shortstop Jessi Case on second after she had earned her spot on the bases with a walk and allowed Raper to score to make it 3-0.

Campos stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-out RBI single to left field, scoring Case to complete the Rangers' scoring at 4-0.

The Rangers would add another run in the fifth as they strung together a series of singles from Wick, Clark, and a walk from Reed to load the bases. Wick would score on a wild pitch to make it a 5-0 Regis lead.

St. Edward's scored its first and only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth after a triple and an error in the outfielder allowed the unearned run.

After adding another insurance run in the sixth,  Harpman struck out the first batter of the home-half of the inning and Covington shut the door on the Hilltoppers, forcing a groundout and a pop fly to center to secure the win.

Game Notes:
  • Sophomore Abby Larsen led Regis with three of the team's eight walks in Game One
  • Kylie Harpman allowed just one unearned run on two hits while recording an early-season high with eight strikeouts
Game Two | How It Happened:
Three different Rangers would record hits in Game Two, but Regis was unable to string hits together in the doubleheader finale as it fell by a 3-0 final.

Junior right-hander Alexis Kemp, who tossed two clean innings of relief, and freshman right-hander Vanessa Candito recorded two strikeouts apiece in the pitching circle.

Campos, Williams and senior infielder Shayelyn Allen, who doubled in the third inning, would each finish with a hit to pace the Regis offense.

Up Next: The Rangers open conference play with a four-game set against Colorado State University Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday.
