Regis softball takes its first series win of the 2023 season

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University softball team took its first series win of the 2023 season on Sunday, taking both games in the doubleheader against Colorado State University Pueblo, by a score of 7-3 in Game One, and a dominating 13-0 run-rule shutout in Game Two.

Two three-run innings and another run in the sixth got the Rangers (6-8 overall, 3-1 RMAC) off to a strong start on Sunday while junior right-hander Alexis Kemp held the ThunerWolves (6-5 overall, 1-3 RMAC) to only one hit through her five innings of work in the 13-0 run-rule win in Game Two.

How It Happened | Game One: The Rangers got off to a fast start Sunday morning as sophomore transfer Abby Larsen launched a 3-run home run, her first as a Ranger, over the left field wall.

Continuing their scoring escapade was another 3-run inning in the top of the third. Both freshman outfielder Olivia Wick and first-year Sienna Reed recorded two more RBIs of their own with Wick also crossing the plate thanks to a wild pitch.

Going into the bottom of the fourth 6-0, the ThunderWolves found three runs of their own but that was all the run production they would get.

In the top of the sixth, Larsen recorded her fourth RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk that inflated the Rangers' lead to 7-3.

On the mound, a tag team effort between freshman right-hander Vanessa Candito and junior pitcher Katherine Raper combined for only two hits through their seven innings of work.

Game Notes:

How It Happened | Game Two: Junior pitcher Alexis Kemp got her first start for the 2023 season and made the most of it with a shutout thanks to five strikeouts and a healthy combination of flyouts (4) and ground outs (6).

The Rangers backed up Kemp's performance with an explosive offense that scored at least two runs every inning and combined for a total of 13 hits.

Sophomore infielder Miia Campos led the charge against the ThunderWolves with four RBIs, followed by Larsen with two, and freshman Olivia Wick and Case with one apiece.

The remaining five runs came unearned largely in part to a handful of errors from the ThunderWolves defense.

CSU Pueblo would record its only hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth but would retire after a groundout to second base ended the game.

Game Notes:

Up Next: The Rangers open their 2023 home slate with Chadron State College traveling down to Denver next weekend. First pitch on Saturday, Feb. 25, is scheduled for 12 p.m.
