Regis secures first conference title in 16 years with 66-46 win over CSU Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis women's basketball team claimed its first regular season RMAC title in 16 years on Saturday, earning the outright title following a road win over Colorado State University Pueblo, 66-46.

"Winnning the RMAC has always been a dream of as a coach and the players delivered it to Regis," said Regis women's basketball head coach, Molly Marrin, who helped win the program's first RMAC Tournament title in 2002-03 as a player. "I'm emotional and will never forget this day with them. "Our staff should also be credited because they work tirelessly to support me and our players. Jessie [Craig] and Jason [Kohler] are truly the best of the best."

With the win, the Rangers (22-6 overall, 19-3 RMAC) secure the No. 1 seed in the RMAC tournament and begin the tournament with a rematch against the ThunderWolves (14-14 overall, 11-11 RMAC) on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Regis Fieldhouse.

The Rangers, who previously won the RMAC regular season and tournament titles in 2006-07, secured the win on Saturday thanks to double-digit efforts from four different Rangers and a 11-0 run in the fourth quarter that sealed the deal for Regis.

"Tonight was our best defensive game of the year and our toughness and energy were off the charts," said Marrin. "I'm ecstatic that the players and staff got to experience such an exciting win."

How It Happened: By the end of the first half, the Rangers had built a 16-point lead that the ThunderWolves would be unable to catch up to for the rest of the game.

That lead had inflated to as many as 25 points following a layup from senior forward Sam Deem at the 6:13 mark in the fourth. Deem would finish the night with 11 points, seven rebounds, and an assist.

Continuing their offensive charge, the Rangers opened the fourth quarter with a 11-0 run bookended with a layup from Deem at the 6:33 mark that put the game out of reach for the ThunderWolves.

Leading the Rangers' scoring efforts was junior guard Erin Fry who scored 22 points while also securing three rebounds and a team-high four assists on the night.

Joining Ryan and Fry in the double-digits club was senior guard Josey Ryan (13) and graduate student forward Erin Stroberg (10).

The Rangers' defense was key in the game on Saturday, holding the ThunderWolves to their seventh-lowest shooting percentage of the season (.328) while also outrebounding CSU Pueblo, 53-27.

18 of those 53 boards for the Rangers were offensive rebounds. The Rangers were able to successfully convert those rebounds into 18 second chance points while the ThunderWolves only converted their offensive rebounds into six second chance points.

"The rebounding effort was relentless and inspiring. We wanted this championship very badly and played like it," said Marrin.

Game Notes:

  • Regis went a perfect 14-14 from the free throw line
  • The Rangers shot 42 percent (10-24) from three
  • Regis' 53 rebounds is a season-high
