DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team completed its second four-game sweep of the 2023 season after defeating New Mexico Highlands University, 4-1, in Game Three, and, 5-2, in Game Four.
Sophomore right-hander Kylie Harpman continues to be the anchor for the Rangers (25-17 overall, 22-10 RMAC) as she threw a total of nine strikeouts in her eight total innings of work. The Regis offense took advantage of the Cowgirls' (14-25 overall, 10-21 RMAC) pitching and totaled 14 hits in their Game Three (6) and Game Four (8) wins.Â
"Today's sweep to seal the four-game series win is big for us," said Regis head softball coach, Nicole Thompson. "The RMAC is such a tough battle right now and no one has secured a spot in the tournament yet."
Game Three | How It Happened:Â Harpman once again showed out in dominating fashion early Saturday morning, fanning seven and only allowing one walk.Â
With her performance over the weekend, Harpman now moves into fifth in ERA (2.48) across the conference.
But it was a joint effort as the Rangers strung together six hits, featuring freshman outfielder Olivia Wick's fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to give the Rangers more cushion in their 4-1 win.
Alongside Wick was senior infielder Shayelyn Allen and sophomore catcher Rachel Williams who secured two RBIs total. Allen hit the ball back to the pitcher while Williams cashed in on her shot to right center for a triple, her third of the season.
The fourth run came from Wick with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third.
Game Notes:
"Miia [Campos] works so hard on her craft both at the plate and defensively," said Thopmson. "She may not be the flashiest player but she is always someone we can count on and that's huge to have. She has came up big in clutch spots offensively with some big RBIs for us."
Game Four | How It Happened:Â The final game of the four-game series was a team effort as seven of the nine Regis starters had at least one hit with Campos leading the charge with two hits.
With those seven hits, four of them scored at least one run while three of those four hits were extra-base hits.
The Rangers jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a double from Allen, scoring two, and another double from freshman right fielder Sienna Reed to bring in the third.
Campos accounted for two of the four scoring hits with a single and a triple to push the final two runs for the Rangers across the plate.
NMHU hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth but would be the only scoring opportunity the Cowgirls had all game.
Game Notes:
Up Next:Â The Rangers travel to Grand Junction, Colo. to take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. First pitch is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. (MT).
"We are going to celebrate this weekend the rest of day and spend Easter with our friends and family tomorrow and then back to work," said Thompson. "We know Mesa is going to be tough but this group has shown its battle tested and ready for this challenge."
