Bunch nets two goals, Rangers erupt for four goals in win over UT Permian Basin

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team bounced back from a tough loss earlier in the week with a convincing 4-2 victory over the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Sunday to conclude its four-game home stand.

Regis (2-2 overall) received two goals from sophomore forward Natalie Bunch and never trailed Sunday in what was a much-needed statement win following a 3-2 loss to Lubbock Christian University on Wednesday.

"It was a good response from us after a disappointing result a couple days ago. We were really sharp in the first half, moved the ball nicely, and created some really good goal scoring opportunities," said Regis head coach, Jeff Frykholm.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers wasted little time grabbing the lead as Bunch netted her first of two scores just 2:16 into the contest after getting behind the Falcons (0-2-1) back line.

Texas Permian Basin was able to tie the game briefly in the 12th minute after taking advantage of a corner kick opportunity, but Regis responded less than a minute later when senior midfielder Teagan Marshall, making her first start of 2023, finished off a feed from freshman Madeline Gardner to put the Rangers back on top for good at the 12:19 mark.

"That was a huge goal from Teagan and a great way for us to respond. The goal from UT Permian Basin could have been a turning point in the match, but we immediately responded and kind of restored order," Frykholm said. "I was really happy for Teagan to get that goal. We've been trying to work her in a little bit more, she's been training very well and so that was great to see her get rewarded for that hard work."

The Rangers' attack was not done yet as they added one more score before the half for good measure as juniors Sarah Wynn and Alex Baer tic-tac-toed a perfect two-on-one situation deep in the attacking third, with Wynn scoring her third goal of 2023 off the assist by Baer at the 27:02 mark.

After enjoying a 3-1 lead at the break, Regis put the game away for good in the 61st minute when Bunch forced a penalty kick opportunity, and took the PK herself, to record her second tally of the afternoon and balloon the lead to 4-1.

"Natalie is really clinical in her finishing and so difficult to defend. She drew the penalty with how quick and shifty she is and she can hurt teams a lot of different ways," Frykholm said. "Her drawing that penalty and making the shot really put the game away for us."

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished with an 18-16 advantage in total shots, including 12-7 in shots on goal
  • Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Arucan drew the start and earned the victory, making one save in her 45 minutes of action.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover played the second half and stopped four of the five shots she faced.
UP NEXT
The Rangers head off for their first road trip of 2023 next week for battles against Central Washington University (8 p.m. Friday) and Saint Martin's University (1 p.m. Sunday).

"We'll face two really good opponents out in Washington and it's never easy on the road. It'll be an important week for us and an opportunity for us to play well," Frykholm said. "I think we match up with these teams, but we certainly have to be on point."
