Regis erupts for three goals in the second half, blanks Central Washington to begin road trip

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Going on the road for the first time in 2023, the Regis University women's soccer team weathered the storm in the first half before erupting for three tallies in the second half en route to a 3-0 clean sheet against Central Washington University.

With the win, the Rangers move back above .500 at 3-2 overall on the season, while the loss drops Central Washington to 1-4 overall.

"It was a tale of two halves for us. We were under a lot of pressure, teams being aggressive against us, and looked a little disconnected in the first half. But if was a different story in second half," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We did a great job of meeting Central Washington's energy level and we were able to move the ball much more cleanly. It was one of the best halves we have played in terms of dealing with pressure, finding open passes lanes and getting great goal scoring opportunities."

HOW IT HAPPENED
After neither team was able to find pay dirt in the first half, the Rangers produced two quick strikes to begin the final 45 minutes. And it would be two much-needed goals for graduate student forward Kelby Kuo in the 51st minute and 53rd minute, respectively, that helped break the dam open.

For Kuo, the two goals were the first of 2023 for the Second Team All-Region player and Regis leading goal scorer in 2022.

"It was great to see Kelby get a couple goals and get that monkey off her back," Frykholm said. "It's always tough when you expect to score and are used to scoring, but they just aren't going in for you. So to get her back on the score sheet again was great."

Regis would add one more insurance goal for good measure when sophomore Natalie Bunch, the defending RMAC Offensive Player of the Week, netted her third goal of the fall in the 68th minute off a feed from freshman Madeline Gardner.

For Gardner, it was her second assist of the evening and extended her point streak to four straight games.

Complimenting the offensive outburst was a solid game from the Regis defense as the Rangers earned their second shutout of the season and limited Central Washington to just five shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover earned the victory as she stopped both shots she faced in the first half, while true freshman Kayla Arucan made three saved over the final 45 minutes.

"I thought we played really well defensively and got some great goalkeeping in the moments when we needed it," Frykholm said. "It was a game where we learned a lot in the first half and executed what we learned in the second half. I'm really proud of the players for their resolve in writing that second half the way we wanted to."

UP NEXT
Regis will continue its Washington road trip on Sunday when it takes on Saint Martin's University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Mountain Time.
