Gardner extends point streak to five straight, Rangers complete undefeated week out in Washington

LACEY, Wash. — The Regis University women's soccer team rattled off its third straight victory, and completed a two-game sweep on its Washington road trip, with a convincing 3-0 victory Sunday over Saint Martin's University.

Regis finishes its non-conference portion of the schedule with a 4-2 record — a major focal point for the Rangers after starting 1-4-1 in 2022 — and the team has scored three or more goals in each of its past three games that include a 4-2 win over Texas Permian Basin and a 3-0 shutout of Central Washington to begin the road trip on Friday.

"It was another challenging first half where we faced a lot of pressure, but after a few minutes we settled in and began to maintain possession and generate scoring chances," said Regis head coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We had some young players give us a lift today and we defended really well again to keep (the Saints) dangerous opportunities to a minimum."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers took advantage of a Saint Martin's miscue to get on the scoreboard first in the 32nd minute when a ball played into the box by Regis defenseman Gianna Sparaco was misplayed and deflected into the back of the net by a Saints' defender for an own goal.

Less than nine minutes later, Sparaco would again have a hand in a Regis score as she found forward Madeline Gardner for a goal at the 40:18 mark, giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead at the break.

Gardner and the Rangers then put the game away in the 73rd minute when the freshman corralled a feed from sophomore Natalie Bunch and netted her second goal of the match to make it a 3-0 Regis lead.

The two goals for Gardner upped her early season total to three, while extending her points streak to five straight games. Gardner leads all Regis players with 10 total points (3 goals, 4 assists) through the team's first six contests.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Kayla Arucan earned her first career shutout — she contributed to a 3-0 combined shutout of Central Washington on Friday — after stopping all four shots on goal she faced in 90 minutes Sunday.

"Overall, getting six points on the road is always a challenge and we did so without surrendering a goal, which was one of our objectives for the week," Frykholm said. "Now we head into the RMAC with a little bit of momentum."

UP NEXT
Regis will open up RMAC play this Friday when it hosts crosstown rival MSU Denver. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.

In addition to the women's game on Friday, the Regis men's soccer team is scheduled to host Colorado Mesa University in a non-conference contest. At the conclusion of the men's game, fans will be treated to a free firework show at the turf fields complex.
