Bunch provides the early fireworks in Rangers' 2-1 win over rival MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo — The Regis University women's soccer team kicked off Blue and Gold Weekend, as well as RMAC conference play, in thrilling fashion as the Rangers overcame an early 1-0 hole to knock off crosstown rival Metropolitan State University of Denver, 2-1, on Friday.

Regis (5-2 overall, 1-0 RMAC) was led by sophomore forward Natalie Bunch, who provided the prequel to Friday night's fireworks display with a two-goal performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED
MSU Denver would draw first blood on Friday, capitalizing on a misplayed goal kick by the Rangers to net a goal in the 21st minute.

The Rangers would shake off the mistake, though, and get on the scoreboard themselves just eight minutes later when Bunch, for the second time in 2023, was able to draw a penalty kick through her work in the attacking third.

Bunch would then finish off the opportunity she created with her second penalty kick goal of the season to bring the score level again at 1-1.

The sophomore added to her sensational night in the 40th minute as she rifled a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off a MSU Denver defender and into the back of the net for what would prove to be the game-winner at the 39:01 mark.

For Bunch, her two goals ballooned her season total to a team-high five goals through the Rangers' first seven games.

GAME NOTES
  • Regis outshot the visiting Roadrunners, 20-13, but MSU Denver held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Rangers doubled up MSU Denver in set piece opportunities, finishing with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Arucan drew the start and earned the victory, stopping five of the six shots she faced in the first half.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover was 2-for-2 in her save opportunities in the second half.
  • Bunch and freshman forward Madeline Gardner paced all Rangers with four shots apiece.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will travel just a few miles to the southeast on Sunday when they take on another nearby rival in Colorado Christian University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. out in Lakewood.
