Rangers mount second-half comeback, knock off CCU to complete six-point weekend

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team mounted a late second-half rally on Sunday, scoring two goals in the final 15 minutes to surge past Colorado Christian University, 2-1, to cap a six-point weekend for the Rangers to begin RMAC play.

Regis (6-2 overall, 2-0 RMAC) opened Blue & Gold weekend with a 2-1 victory Friday against MSU Denver before closing the weekend with another 2-1 rivalry game win against the Cougars (2-4-1 overall, 1-2 RMAC) Sunday out at Trailblazer Stadium.

"It was a tough weekend with a really emotional game Friday, obviously, and then to come back on a hot Sunday afternoon; I was really proud of the players," said Regis head coach, Jeff Frykholm. "I thought we came out really well, but credit to CCU for their brilliant moment there late in the half to go up 1-0. And then the work began for us."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis came out of the gates strong, racking up the first four shots of the contest and out-shooting the Cougars, 6-4, in the first half. But it would be CCU that struck first as Jessie Sims was able to thread a glancing shot off the crossbar and in to put the Cougars ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute.

CCU would enjoy that 1-0 lead until entering the waning minutes of the second half before the Rangers pulled even at the 76:45 mark on the first career goal by freshman forward Brooke Castillo.

Castillo's score came via a tremendous individual effort as she fought for a loose ball in the CCU box, cleared space and rifled a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner to square the game at 1-1.

"That was vintage Brooke moment. We called her, 'The Assassin,' during the recruiting process and that play kind of embodied why. She's relentless, really strong and she hunts the ball in the box," Frykholm said. "She was quick and decisive when she got the ball and it was a great moment for her. It energized the team and the bench and gave us belief that a second goal was in store for us."

The Rangers, who played pepper with the CCU crossbar multiple times over the final 45 minutes, made that belief a reality at the 85:15 mark when sophomore forward Natalie Bunch tallied her third goal of the weekend.

Senior forward Kelby Kuo helped get the play started as she rifled a shot from 20 yards out that pinged off the crossbar and fell to Bunch, who knocked it home for her second game-winning goal of the weekend and team-leading sixth goal of the fall.

"Natalie is playing exceptionally well right now, super confident, playing within herself and is consistently doing what she does, which is work extremely hard and put pressure on defenders," Frykholm said. "I think her recent success has a lot to do with her mentality of never quitting on a play and she's very opportunistic. She's deceptive on the ball and has the ability to beat you a lot of different ways. Her whole game right now is complete, connected and together. It's wonderful to see her getting rewarded for the work she's put in."

GAME NOTES
  • Regis held an 11-4 advantage in shots during Sunday's second half and finished with a 17-8 edge for the game.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover earned the victory and made one save on the afternoon.
  • The six goals for Bunch has already doubled the three scores she had in 18 games as a freshman in 2022.
UP NEXT
The Rangers will continue their season long five-game road trip next week with trips to face Westminster College (7 p.m. Friday) and No. 15 ranked Colorado School of Mines (1 p.m. Sunday).
