Wynn nets two scores, Rangers roll to 3-0 victory over San Francisco State

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team picked up its first win of 2023 on Sunday, bouncing back from a tough 2-1 loss on Friday to earn a resounding 3-0 shutout of San Francisco State University.

Regis (1-1 overall) received a pair of first half goals from junior forward Sarah Wynn, and the Rangers' defense held the visiting Gators (0-2 overall) to just five shots on goal en route to the first shutout of the fall.

"That was a really good, complete performance from us. We really wanted to focus on returning to our principles and, within our structure, give the players the freedom and flexibility to play and I thought they did a great job with that," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "We moved the ball, had a ton of connected passes and just an all-around complete performance where we were also able to get a lot of kids in."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis took advantage of its depth in the first half, wearing down a San Francisco State team that was playing its second game at altitude in the past 48 hours.

The Rangers outshot the Gators, 11-5, in the opening 45 minutes and broke through with the game's first goal in the 32nd minute when junior forward Sarah Wynn finished off a crossing pass from freshman Madeline Gardner.

Just six minutes later, it was Wynn again who would find the scoresheet; this time settling an entry pass from Taylor Brown and burying a rocket into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead at the 37:28 mark.

Wynn, a Second Team All-RMAC selection as a freshman in 2021, was held without a goal last fall. But with the two scores Sunday, the junior is looking poised to return to her All-Conference form again in 2023.

"Those two goals for Sarah have been a long time coming. She's been working so hard and training very well," Frykholm said. "We knew coming into the game that (SFSU), a California team playing it's second game in two days with a travel roster, that we were going to have a little bit of an advantage with our depth. So when Sarah and that wave came in, they were able to provide a new level of pressure."

Regis would enjoy that 2-0 lead at the half before adding one final insurance goal in the 69th minute when junior forward Stella Straubing was able to arc her corner kick opportunity past the outstretched hands of the Gators' goalkeeper for her first score of 2023.

"That's one of those goals that you don't really plan for. But if you strike the ball well, you bend it on goal, sometimes that happens. And Stella is another person that is was really good to see get on the scoresheet," Frykholm said.

Defensively, the Rangers limited San Francisco State to only eight total shot attempts, with all five shots on goal being handled cleanly by sophomore goalkeeper Grace Glover.

Glover, playing in her third career game and earning her first start, played 75 minutes on Sunday en route to picking up her first collegiate win.
"All three of our goalkeepers have been training well and are right there next to each other. It was Grace's chance to get the start today and I thought she responded really well," Frykholm said. "She was in the right places at the right time, handled anything that came her way."

GAME NOTES
  • Regis finished the afternoon with a 16-8 advantage in total shots
  • Each team's goalkeepers posted five saves.
  • Regis held a 4-3 edge in corner kick opportunities.

UP NEXT
The Rangers will continue their current four-game home stand on Wednesday when they host Lubbock Christian University in what will be the first of two crucial non-conference games against Lone Star Conference opponents this week.

"You get a couple chances each year to prove yourself, regionally, and we really need to buckle down and make sure we perform well against these two Texas teams," Frykholm said. "We're expecting two really good games and we know what's at stake. We learned last year when we dropped regional games that it can hurt you at the end, so everyone in the program knows the importance of those matches."
