Rangers make late rally, but fall by 3-2 final to Lubbock Christian

DENVER, Colo. — The Regis University women's soccer team showed plenty of positive signs Wednesday, but struggled to put together a complete 90-minutes in its non-conference bout against Lubbock Christian University, falling by a 3-2 final out at the Regis Turf Fields.

Regis (1-2 overall) outshot the visiting Chaparrals (1-1-1 overall), 19-14, including a 12-6 margin in the second half. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the Lady Chaps were able to take advantage of some untimely defensive lapses to steal the road win.

"There were some really good individual moments, but credit to Lubbock Christian. They applied pressure in all the right places that our system just wasn't quite trained well enough to handle," said Regis head women's soccer coach, Jeff Frykholm. "Some of the mistakes we made (Wednesday), clearances or whatever they may be, are a result of being put under pressure."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lubbock Christian was able to draw first blood in the sixth minute, capitalizing on a great lead pass from Emma Best and a 50-50 ball win from Lexi De La Cruz, who was able to chip the ball over the crashing goalkeeper's head to make it a 1-0 game.

Regis would respond seven minutes later when junior Alex Baer threaded a pass to a streaking Madeline Gardner, who promptly tallied her first career collegiate goal that brought the Rangers back even at 1-1 in the 13th minute.

Through her first three career games, Gardner has been electric as she boasts one goal, one assist and has drawn back-to-back starts.

"That was a big goal to get us back level and she is just such a hard worker. She never shuts down," Frykholm said of Gardner. "She's also a handful for defenses, athletic. She's strong, fast and tenacious. She's really starting to get integrated into the team and she definitely had moments tonight where she looked very, very dangerous."

Regis and LCU would not remain tied for long, though, as the Lady Chaps recaptured the lead in the 18th minute when De La Cruz was able to get behind the defense, force a commit, and found Emily Douglas streaking on the left side for a score that put LCU back on top, 2-1.

Nearing the end of the first half, the Rangers appeared poised to send the game into the half tied again, but had three shot attempts in the final 12 minutes all find at the hands of LCU goalkeeper Kara Murray, who stopped 10 of the 12 shots she faced on the evening.

"The chances started to come, we were throwing some punches at the end of the first half when LCU was tiring a bit. It seemed like the tide was turning, but we just couldn't get it leveled at the half," Frykholm said. "Had we been able to figure out a way to tie it up there, I think we probably would have been able to talk about some different things at halftime, get to start over and see who can be the better team over the final 45 minutes, that's a different mindset. Unfortunately, we were in a hole again."

De La Cruz would add to her five-point night with her second goal of the game in the 60th minute to give LCU what proved to be a much-needed insurance goal.

The Rangers made things interesting in the 89th minute, pulling back to within one at 3-2 when freshman midfielder Taylor Brown connected on a lead pass to Alex Baer for Baer's first goal of the 2023 campaign with 59 seconds remaining.

After controlling the ensuing kickoff, the Rangers one more shot attempt off at the 89:40 mark, but were unable to complete the late comeback.

"It was a great effort the last few minutes, the young women played hard, and we gave ourselves a chance in that last minute. We had the ball deep in there end with a chance to get something dangerous out of it. They kept fighting and I'm proud of them for that," Frykholm said. "But when we talked afterwards, we knew it was just a little too late. We gave away a little bit too much in the first half. There's a lot of positives for sure. It hurts to drop one, but we have some things to build on moving forward."

UP NEXT
Regis will conclude its four-game home stand this Sunday when it welcomes in another Texas foe in Texas Permian Basin. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.
