Regis splits on Day One of Colorado Premier Challenge, hosts Silver Bracket on Saturday

DENVER, Colo. — The No. 19 ranked Regis University volleyball team had a strong showing during Day One of the 28th annual Colorado Premier Challenge, finishing 1-1 overall on the afternoon with a 3-0 rout of (RV) University of Texas-Tyler and a nail-biting 3-1 loss to No. 3 ranked Wayne State College.

Regis (3-3 overall) enters Saturday's pool play in the Silver Bracket and will play No. 16 Cal State LA (2-4 overall) at 11:30 a.m. inside the Regis Fieldhouse for the right to move on to the Silver Bracket first place match.

MATCH VS. (RV) UT TYLER
The Rangers began tournament play with a 25-16, 25-18 and 25-16 thumping of UT Tyler (4-2 overall), holding the visiting Patriots to a meager .108 attack percentage while dominating at the service line, 8-2, in aces.

Graduate student middle blocker Nadine Burbrink helped lead the charge with her best performance of the young 2023 season, pacing all Rangers with nine kills, two solo blocks and three block assists for a total of 13.5 points.

Fellow middle blocker, junior Amelia Davis, followed with eight kills on a team-best .467 hitting percentage while adding three block assists of her own.

Graduate student setter Mara LeGrand, the current tournament leader in assists per set through two matches played, added three kills and 28 assists in the victory.

Across the back line, graduate student libero Haley Kennedy posted a team-high 13 digs, while junior Bre Skala and true freshman Elie King added four digs and three digs, respectively.

MATCH VS. NO.3 WAYNE STATE COLLEGE
The Rangers closed out their home opening doubleheader with a tight 3-1 loss to the defending Colorado Premier Challenge gold bracket champions, No. 3 ranked Wayne State College.

Wayne State edged the Rangers be narrow scores of 28-26 and 25-23 through the match's first two sets, taking advantage of 15-5 edge the Wildcats had over Regis in attack errors.

Regis stormed back to win Set Three by a resounding 25-12 margin, hitting .520 as a team while limiting the Wildcats to .069.

Senior outside hitter Halle Theis and Klaudia Sowizral each posted new season highs with 22 kills and 19 kills, respectively, while junior outside hitter Hannah Kepler was the third Ranger in double-figures with 11 kills.

The Rangers rode that momentum en route to grabbing an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set, and held a lead as late as 23-22, but the Wildcats were able to battle back and win the match with a 26-24 decision in Set Four.

As a team, Regis hit a blistering .292 against the Wildcats, and held a decisive 81-55 edge in total digs, but lost the attack error battle, 23-15.

LeGrand added to her huge afternoon with a match-high 22 digs; her career-high of 30 digs came during the 2021 Colorado Premier Challenge against Lewis University.

Skala and Kennedy also posted double-digit dig totals with 17 and 11, respectively. The 17 digs were a new career-high for Skala, topping her previous best of 16 digs, last accomplished against Fort Lewis College last September.
