DENVER, Colo. – In a dominant performance, the Regis University Men's Soccer team secured a 7-0, victory over Adams State University in Thursdays RMAC game. The Rangers improve to 5-2-5 (3-0-0 RMAC), while the Mavericks fall to 2-5-1 (0-2-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers controlled the pace early with Jacobo Betancourt- Tovar testing ASU goalkeeper in the opening minutes. The match stayed scoreless until the 24th minute, when an own goal by ASU put Regis up 1-0. Regis then found their rhythm. Liam Corr scored the first of his two goals at the 32-minute mark, assisted by Betancourt-Tovar. In the next minute, Elias Taubo added two goals for the Rangers, including a well-executed combination play with Corr and Kaden Cameron. By halftime Regis was in firm control leading the match 4-0.
The onslaught continued as Corr netted his second goal early in the second half, 48-minute mark, extending RUs lead to 5-0. The Rangers did not let up, Kaden Cameron fired a shot in the next seconds, resulting to a corner kick for RU. Regis then added another goal in the 63rd minute through Betancourt-Tovar, assisted by Taubo and Corr, making it 6-0. ASU struggled to generate anything, with Regis defensive efforts limiting their chances. In the 84th minute ASU went down a man and Regis shortly capitalized with Ignacio Bellina scoring the final goal of the match to seal the 7-0 win.
"Obviously happy with the result. I thought we came out a bit slow at the start but settled into the game well. It's great to have a lot of guys contributing to the attacking 1/3. Anytime you have 4-5 guys who can all chip in with goals and assists rather than counting on 1-2 to get the job done you're going to have better chances of getting results." Said head coach Taylor Diem.
"Honestly though we're even more happy with the defensive performances over the last few weeks to really limit our opponents' chances." Diem said, "Another big game on Sunday against a really strong Fort Lewis team so we'll have to recover and regroup quickly."
GAME NOTES
RU totaled 28 shots.
Regis defensive only allowing 2 shots on goal by the Grizzlies.
