HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks came out strong in the first set, taking four of the first five points. RU came back, tying the game with back-to-back kills from
Amelia Davis and
Bryn McNair. In a back-forth match, strong plays from Davis and
Halle Theis kept the score close with key kills and a service ace. However, CMU put together a late run that would give them the 25-23 victory.
Bouncing back,
Krissy Brei delivered two service aces, and Regis continued to capitalize on CMU's attacking errors. The Mavericks continued to fight back, going on a five-point run and scoring 15-15. Theis and McNair added crucial kills that helped extend their lead. After another back-and-forth match, it ended with Regis capitalizing on CMU's mistakes to even the match at one set apiece, 25-23.
Early in the third set, Regis kept it close with back-to-back kills from Theis, taking the lead 11-10. CMU started to pull away, going on small runs. The Rangers looked to gain momentum with solid blocking from
Braiziah Dixon and
Lindsey Cure. The Mavericks' consistent pressure eventually wore down the Rangers, as CMU pulled away to secure the set victory, 17-25.
In the fourth, CMU came out early, going on a 4-point run. A kill from Davis stopped the run, but the Mavericks would continue their lead. Brei added a service ace, while Theis showed resilience with a kill that kept Regis fighting. However, CMU maintained their lead and took control of the fourth set, 15-25.
"Hats off to Colorado Mesa, a very aggressive team, they have a lot of returners and played very maturely," said Head Coach
Joel List. "Offensively, they did a good job, we couldn't quite match it, defensively, they did a good job, we couldn't quite score."
"I think it's about moving forward and not dwelling on the past mistakes that we made, we can learn from them in practice." said senior Libero
Bre Skala.
"We are taking this season one game at a time, looking at the past, and learning from this match and getting better because we can cause some problems later," concluded Coach List.
