DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team dropped their final home match of the year to #18 Colorado Mesa University, 0-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Rangers fall to 5-9-3 (4-5-2 RMAC) on the year, while the Mavericks improve to 12-2-2 (10-1-0 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alex Baer had the first shot of the game, but her attempt would hit the left post. Madeline Gardner and Sarah Wynn each took shots around the 26 minute mark, but both of those would be wide as well. On just the second shot of the match for the Mavericks, they would score on a goal by Braelyn Baclayon at 34:37. Neither team would muster a shot for the rest of the period, and CMU took the 1-0 lead into the half.
After a shot by Morgan Black was saved, Mesa added to their lead with a penalty shot goal by Abby Fotheringham at 56:38. Brooke Castillo's shot in the 57th minute was saved, as were tries by Madison Moss and Garnder 10 minutes later. Maggie Payne saved the last shot of the game for Mesa in the 86th minute, and Natalie Bunch landed one more on goal before the end of the game.
"I was really proud of how the girls played," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm. "I feel like we had a lot of great opportunities that just didn't bounce our way. It feels like that's how the last couple weeks have gone. Overall our play has been strong, but just not finishing like I know we can. It's a tough loss, but I want to say another thank you to an amazing graduating class, and it's time to look ahead to Wednesday to extend our season."
