SPEARFISH, SD. -- The Regis University women's soccer team overlook Black Hills State University, 4-0 in a Wednesday night match-up. The Rangers move to 9-9-3 (5-5-2 RMAC), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-11-4 (3-8-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Rangers started the match early, taking the lead within the 4
th minute when
Madeline Gardner found the bottom right corner of the goal, giving Regis a 1-0 lead. Regis maintained the pressure with consecutive shots from
Alyssa Granno and
Stella Straubing, coming within a minute of each other. RU doubled their advantage in the 39th minute through
Natalie Bunch, who scored a low shot to the right and assisted
Gianna Sparaco, who made a perfect pass into the box. Concluding the half with Regis leading 2-0.
Starting early, Madeline Garner and
Taylor Brown attempted two shots to start the 2
nd half of the match. The second half remained fast-paced, with both teams creating scoring opportunities and taking shots on goal. It wasn't until the 86
th minute of the match that
Fernanda Rodriguez scored her first goal, extending the lead 3-0. Just a moment later, Rodriguez scored her second goal of the night in the 88
th minute, sealing the Rangers with a 4-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
"I am really proud of the players for digging deep in what could have been a really tricky match. Long bus ride, cold and wet, lots of uncertainties. But they really executed the game plan well and took care of the chances that came our way," said Head Coach
Jeff Frykholm.
"We are excited to continue into the playoffs and have some good momentum after playing pretty well these last couple weeks of the regular season. We had great contributions today from across all four classes, which is also really positive and bodes well for the future, both the near term as well as subsequent seasons," concluded Coach Frykholm.
GAME NOTES
The Yellow Jackets outshot the Rangers, 17 shots to Regis's 15.
Regis recorded six saves while Black Hills tallied five.

The Rangers play on, securing the eighth seed in the RMAC Tournament, and head to number seven Fort Lewis at 1:00 pm on Friday.
