Durango, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Soccer team saw their 2024 season come to an end on Saturday evening, as they fell to Fort Lewis College (Colo.), 0-3, in the #7-#8 matchup of the RMAC Conference Tournament. The Rangers end their season with a 6-10-3 (5-5-2 RMAC) record, wile the Skyhawks advance with a 9-5-4 (5-4-3 RMAC) record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Madison Cullinan would take the first shot of the match, but Fort Lewis would score first with a goal by Haley Stafford, assisted by Sabrina Reyes, at 13:04. Maggie Payne had her first save in the 15th minute, and Natalie Bunch had the Rangers first shot on goal four minutes later. Regis took four of the next six shots of the game, but none of the attempts by either team would be on goal. With less than four minutes left in the half, FLC extended their lead to 2-0 with an Abigail Nkrumah-assisted goal by Ashlyn Salas.
Payne saved another shot early in the second before Alex Baer had two shots on goal within less than a minute. At 61:35, the Skyhawks scored their third goal of the day, and the second by Salas. Madeline Gardner, Stella Straubing, and Bunch all attempted shots in the waning minutes, but eh Skyhawks defense held strong, allowing no goals, and no more shots on goal as they completed the 3-0 win.
"A loss like that is really heartbreaking both because the season comes to a close, but also because despite the score, the team played very well for much of the game," said Head Coach Jeff Frykholm.
"Our seniors did a terrific job fighting to the end tonight, and there were lots of flashes of a really bright future from our younger players."
