AUSTIN, Texas. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team opened their 2024-25 season on Friday night at St. Edward's University (Texas), but fell to the Hilltoppers, 67-73.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Taylin Serlen scored the first points of the season for the Rangers, a pair of free throws she earned doff an offensive rebound. However, SEU responded with a 12-0 that was ended by an Erin Fry jumper, but St. Edward's still extended their lead to 16-4. Addison Branscum hit RU's first triple of the year, but the Rangers still trailed 10-21 at the end of the first period.
Fry and Athena Saragoza took over for the Rangers in the second, scoring all of Regis' points. It included a three-pointer from each, and a total of 11 points from Fry and nine from Saragoza. However, RU still trailed 30-41 going into halftime.
St. Edward's pushed their lead to 20 in the their, but Alexa Dominguez's three, assisted by Fry, began to chip away at that lead. Rachel George added a three, and Saragoza had a pair of steals leading to fast break layups to bring the score to 46-57 at the end of the third.
SEU would again grow their lead to start the final quarter, going up 16 before a Dominguez triple, and Fry converted an and-one. A Serlen steal led to a Jessica Bollwahn layup and Saragonza hit a pair of jump shots. However, even after a Dominguez layup to end the game, Regis still trialed by six.
