DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University earned their first win of the 2024-25 season on Saturday night with a 92-83 win over Lubbock Christian University (Texas). The Rangers improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Chaparrals fall to 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded baskets early in the game, including layups from Ty Cox and Kobe Sanders, and an and-one layup from Chase Mayo Harmon. Chi Achara, Jalen Brown, and Olafur Strymission all scored in the paint for the Rangers, but a triple by the Chaps tied the game at 17-17 halfway through the first half. After threes by May Harmon and Sanders, Eddy Egun scored on a fast break to give Regis their largest lead of the half, 32-24. However, despite Sanders setting up Quinn Lambert twice in the paint, LCU closed the Ranger lead to just 36-35 going into the break.
Cox started the second half with a three assisted by Sanders, then Sanders would hit one of his own. However, Ethan Duncan for the Chaps caught fire, hitting five threes without a miss to put Lubbock Christian up, 58-53. Regis responded with back-to-back triples by Sanders and Mayo Harmon to go up one, and Trey Bryant helped keep RU ahead with a pair of layups. The squads traded leads, but it was Sanders' turn to take over, hitting two threes, and earning two trips to the line, where he would convert all four free throws. The Chaps began to purposefully foul late, but Achara was pure from the stripe, helping RU secure the 92-83 win.
"Once we figured out how to secure the defensive rebounds, we were able to consistently get enough stops to win," said Head Coach Brady Bergeson. "I thought our senior leadership really came through for us tonight."
