DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team fell at home to Western Colorado University on Saturday afternoon, 68-50. The Rangers fall to 5-5 (3-1 RMAC), while the Mountaineers improve to 7-3 (3-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Regis scored the first five points of the game, including a Jessica Bollwahn three and Athena Saragoza jumper. Erin Fry would score the Rangers next five points, but after an Alexa Dominguez triple, Western closed out the period with five straight points to leave the score at 13-13 after one.
The Mountaineers continued their momentum, scoring the first eight points of the second quarter until Taylin Serlen's layup ended the run. The added a hook shot, and Fry beat the buzzer with a three, but RU trailed 20-35 at the end of the first half.
Fiona Snashall converted an and-one to start the second half, but the Rangers struggled to cut into the lead. Saragoza set up Addison Branscum for a three, and she then earned a trip to the line, hitting one of two, and Fry ended the period with two free throws, Regis behind, 35-55.
Fry scord four straight points early in the final period, and Serlen capitalized on an and-one, while Branscum cored again from deep. However, WCU was able to weather the comeback attempt, taking back control and after Snashall's late layup, winning 68-50.
GAME NOTES
· Fry led the Rangers with 18 points, while Ivey Schmidt led all scorers with 21
· Snashall had a game-high 10 rebounds
· Serlen grabbed four steals
· WCU outshot the Rangers from the floor, 45% - 28%, while both teams struggled from deep, 24% - 27%, respectively.
