LAS VEGAS, NM. – The Regis University Women's Basketball team won their RMAC Opener on the road against New Mexico Highlands on Thursday night, 84-77. The Rangers improve to 3-4 (1-0 RMAC) while the Cowgirls fall to 3-4 (0-1 RMAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cowgirls were the first on the board with a triple and layup, going up 5-0 in the first minute.
Erin Fry quickly responded, going on a seven-point, taking the lead.
Addison Branscum would hit back-to-back threes, RU up 13-11. Both teams continued trading baskets until Highlands would close out the quarter with three free throws, Cowgirls ahead 28-24.
Highlands maintained their lead into the second quarter until RU ended a three-minute scoring drought with a pair of free throws from
Taylin Serlen. The Cowgirls went on an eleven-point run, sustaining their lead, 44-33.
Jessica Bollwahn looked to close the gap with another pair of free throws. Fry ended the half, the Rangers behind, 47-39.
Bollwahn would start the scoring for the Rangers, while Snashall and Fry helped bring the game within five, 47-52. Fry continued to dominate on the offensive side, showing two back-to-back jumpers. RU finally took the lead with a jumper from
Alexa Dominguez, 58-56.
Athena Saragoza would find the back of the net, adding a pair of triples to the board, RU up 62-56. Fry would get fouled with 15 seconds to go, knocking both free throws, Rangers ahead 66-61.
Branscum would go on a five-point run to start the 4
th with a pair of free throws and a triple, assisted by Fry. Cowgirls looked to close in on the Rangers until Bollwahn hit one from beyond the arc, RU 78-75. With a minute and a half to go, Fry would nail a couple of free throws, forcing Highlands to take a timeout after neither team would score for over a minute until Fry was fouled, putting RU up 82-75. Rangers would close the game from the line, RU wins 84-77.
GAME NOTES
Fry led RU with 31 points, shooting 42.1% from the field and adding six assists.
Three more Rangers scored in the double digits.
Snasha led the Rangers with seven rebounds.
RU would score 18 points of off turnovers.
Cowgirls outshot the Rangers 52.7% to 43.8% from the field and 46.2% to 28.6% from the three.
